Anyone else racing here at Moody Gardens? Sounds like a great race for those of us who are coming from a non-swimming background. It's open water swim, but if you have trouble you can just stand up... If you have done a triathlon before but still want to race in a non-intimidating environment, they also have "My Next Tri" on the same course. I think there is a 1/2 IM race the following day, so I will stay to watch & learn.

Also, Moody Gardens is a great place to bring your family a day early or after the race....lot's to see and do. Check it out at:

http://www.myfirsttri.com

Hope to see some of you there!

Bill

Found this tri also in June when I decided to Tri my first Tri. BT's bfraley is also doing this one too. We'll have to set up a time and place for BT'ers to meet prior or after race as race date approaches. Happy training!

I also found this race on the internet. It looks like great place for me to try my first Tri. I am taking the family and Moody Gardens is a fun place for the kids.
The swim is in the ocean. Is it really shallow enough to stand up in the entire course.
If it is that is a relief. The swim is my weakest event.

Hope to see ya'll there.

I'm registered for one of the Sunday races.  The swim isn't on the ocean side of the island but in a bayou, it should be somewhat protected even if the waves get a little high on the ocean side.  Moody Gardens built a beach there called Palm Beach, this is probably where the swim starts.

I'm racing Saturday, but I'd be glad to hang out Sunday and be a support crew guy as needed.

Here's some details for the 1st/Next Tri Course:

My Next Triathlon starts at 8:30 am
My First Triathlon starts 9:00 am
Athletes Check in between 7-8 am race morning
Course Descriptions

Swim

WARM, COMFORTABLE, SAFE; Athletes who feel uncomfortable swimming may swim next to shore in waist deep water enabling them to stand up and take a break. Bike 12 mile Loop, out and back, from the transition zone located adjacent to the swim exit area at Moody Gardens. Pancake Flat. Run 3 miles out and back from Moody Gardens. Pancake Flat.

This one sounds like something to do in April... It would be my first and sounds like a road trip is in order.

They have an infomation page and I think there's a course map at the link above. Also FYI. if you try to book the Moody Gardens hotel for that weekend online, the computer says it's all booked. But if you call and tell them you're racing in the tri they have rooms set aside. I think there's a discount rate too, though I don't recall what it is. Good luck!

sorry folks, but i won't be able to compete in this as I had hoped. I found out I'm pregnant. Hope to compete the following year though and will be training although lightly during the pregnancy so i can be in decent shape this time next year. Good luck all, I may stop down just to watch and cheer you all on.

I'm planning on doing this, but I'm having a little confusion with the entry form. The online form has heat 1 and heat 2 entries with First and Next for each heat. Does this mean there are 4 heats of First? 2 on Sat and 2 on Sunday? I've read the entire website and I'm still a bit confused. Anyone have any insight?

Also, are more folks doing Saturday or Sunday?

Hope to meet some of you there!

Brittain

I'm not sure about the heats, but I know I'm racing Saturday. I plan to hang out for Sunday's 1/2 IM (part of the Galveston Intl Tri Fest). You might call the race director number for clarification. I called about my race day and they were really helpful. We'll have to designate a place for the BTers to link up. See you there :-)

Glad to hear it! What a great reason to skip a race! My family will be there the entire weekend, and I believe there is still space available in the cheering section :-) . Congratulations!

Hey Cathleen,

That's great news. Congratulations! My wife and I actually have our first on the way in about 6 weeks. We'll have to see if that puts a damper on my training when he arrives. (that's damper, not pamper...

Take care.

I wrote an e-mail to the My First Triathlon Texas org (My First Triathlon [[email protected]]) to see if I could clear up my confusion about the differences between the website info and the online registration. Here was the response.

"Dear Brittain,

It is only being offered on April 2nd

The print off form has not been changed yet,

The My First Triathlon heat starts 15 minutes after My Next Triathlon, it is
not too clear on the website.

These changes will be made as soon as our webmaster returns from the
holidays.

Thank you for your patience."

I only asked about the "My First Triathlon" so there may be the 1/2 Iron man that was mentioned the next day.

Hope to see you guys there on Saturday!

Brittain

Man I miss Texas... I hope to be back home (Austin) by the end of the year.  Our house is being leased until Oct.  I want to get back to some heat and lots of training..

It seems like more and more tris are being run down in the great state Texas...  I do not remember hearing anything about this one.

I want to tell everyone good luck.. This one is right around the corner.. Train hard and smart

I am considering a road trip to participate in the My First Tri event. Anyone know of a place to stay that is relatively inexpensive? It would be myself, my g/f and maybe my 13yr daughter, depending on how she is doing in school at that time.

It 's been a while since I've been to Galveston, and my copy of Map Point is 2 years old.  FWIW all I see in the area besides the host hotel is a Super 8 and an Econo Lodge about 2 miles away.  I can post phone #s if needed.

If you don't mind a little drive (45 minutes to an hour depending on the ferry schedule), you can stay in Winnie TX and drive to Galveston. Lot's cheaper. I'll be driving from Beaumont on Friday night, staying at the Moody Gardens Hotel. Let me see what else I can find out and I'll get back with you.

I should have said that there are quite a few other hotels on the island, but these are the only hotels really close to the race.

Did you see last years race results? I'd like to know if the guy who averaged 37.8 MPH on his bike and ran a 5:33 pace for the 5K was doing his 'First' or 'Next' triathlon.
