How does it keep the distance? I understand the cadence but I thought the speed and distance where all calculated by the GPS. I have another computer that is on my bike that I got before the 305 that I was I would use with my trainer, but if the 305 will do everything I need that would be fantastic.

It essentiall turns you garmin into any other bike computer.  It uses wheel size and number of revolutions to calculate speed and based on that gives distance.

When you set it up you can select indoor or outdoor use and when you use indoor it turns off the GPS and seaches for a cadence sensor or a footpod for running.  Theoretically you could turn of the GPS outside and use the cadence to save battery life also but would not have the map feature and I don't know how accurate the distance is using the cadence.  I just road yesterday inside and average 18mph and HR was under 120bpm which would be way higher ouside but you also have to figure I had no wind resistance.

Ah ok that makes sense then. I guess I need to look at my Garmin and setup the wheel size. I think I knew about that, but I just glossed over it when I first got the device because I was using it outside only.

Thanks for reminding me, now there is one less device I need on my bike.

Just turn the GPS off.  the unit will still work for HR or anything else.

You can turn the GPS off via the menu or if it doesn't find a satellite it will ask you after a few minutes if you're indoors - just answer yes.

Just turn the GPS off.  the unit will still work for HR or anything else.

Hold in the bottom button on the left hand side (menu I think) for a few seconds and you should see Run, bike and other and under that indoor or outdoor.  Just select indoor and the gps turns off.
