anybody fancy doing a yoga 'challenge' in january? am thinking basically we say how often we'll do yoga, and post what we hope to get out of it. no teams, no targets as such, just supportive discussion of how it helps.

any takers...kathyg?

I cannot possibly miss out on the chance to perhaps ridicule JeepFleeb.

I'm in for six sessions next month.

I really want to join in...having knee surgery this Friday, hoping to get out of there without the microabrasion...

if I do, consider me in. I will keep ya posted. I have ALWAYS wanted a yoga challenge...as my log says 134 hours of it this year Since I lose on the swimming, biking, running challenges this is my only hope.

I'm in! I'll go for a minimum of 4 sessions. That's means I'll have to get my butt to class at least once per week. I can't remember the last time I've done that.

I'm in

I need to figure out what my goal could/should be.

I've been doing like 5 or more hours a week and as my training goes up my Yoga probably needs to come down depending in part if I get a job.

Yoga, yoga!
I'm in.

I'm doing 20 mins before and 10 mins after each run, running 4 days a week...that's 2 hours a week...So if I up that for a real 'challenge'...(counting on my fingers and toes here)...I'm going to shoot for 12 hours for the month. Hopefully it will help me stay injury free while building up the run base.

Is your snowman doing the headstand asana?

I'll join in on the fun too.  I just started yoga and have only been to 3 classes so far, but I'm enjoying it.  I figure I can do one yoga class and one session on my own per week.  So I'll commit to at least 10 sessions for January.  (It's not a lot, I know, but hey I'm a n00b.)

Count me in as my stretching has been poor for a long time and when I use to do it I felt pretty good and limber. Not sure on  a target yet but will repost when I figure one out.

Great idea -- I really need to follow-thru on my yoga practice.  It's so rusty now, it can't even really be called a practice.

I'll shoot for the 1hr/wk minimum and even that will be a challenge.

Thanks for the challenge, -Sunny

I'm in for 3 sessions for the month. I too would like to be relentlessly ridiculed If I don't make it. It doesn't sound like much BUT I completely failed the Yoga portion of my November challenge (3 sessions of Yoga for the month)

I have never been to a yoga class but My coaches and all of my teammates have been urging me to go for years.

Oh and I'd also like to be able to touch my toes without bending my knees.

Oh this is perfect! Yoga, swimming, and physical therapy will probably be all I'm able to do in January anyway. (willow - I'm with you on the knee surgery rehab)

I'll have to think of a goal...especially since it'll probably be a couple weeks before I can do anything involving kneeling. I'm thinking at least 2 hours each week perhaps.

I have never been to a yoga class

Me neither - but I have 2 great DVDs - Yoga Complete for Every Body and Yoga Complete for Athletes. Best part? Besides doing it whenever I want to rather than at set class times, no one else but ME is laughing at my poor flexibility and balance!

So far in December I've done over 17 hours of Yoga. For me currently doing Yoga isn't the issue but balancing it with my training. My IM training is still pretty modest as my body is just getting back to training 4 weeks ago and my coach has me building back in a conservative manner and I'm not working so I have plenty of free time. Monday's have been tough with swim, run, strength and Yoga...

The other cool thing is 3 of my kids want to do it with me as does my husband. We have a bunch of new Yoga DVDs that we can do at home.

I just went to a class with a new to me teacher Sy. After class I was talking and he got into Yoga as a triathlete to gain flexibility and he has offered to work with me to gear my Yoga practice and classes to help with my legs & their flexibility.

Goals for January:
1. Balance Yoga and training better (training needs to come first)
2. Do Yoga flexibility after runs and if possible after bikes
3. Yoga 20 sessions in the month of January

What I hope for my Yoga besides gaining flexibility it to integrate some of the techniques that feel so good about with Yoga into my training..like breathing & relaxing, moment focused and the peace I get doing it.

I'M IN!!!

I'm all for yoga. I will make the attempt for 7 sessions, an odd number but 6 isn't enough and 8 is too many. ;-)
I'm trying to ramp up my running for the Island Race Series which kicks off with a 10K on Jan 27, and my triathlon club is really pressuring me to swim more - but yoga is my favorite so bring on the yoga challenge excuse! lol

I'd be curious to learn what type of yoga folks do and if you take a class, do it on your own from DVD, book or whatever? Which books and/or DVD you love or dislike.

I had been going to a yoga/pilates class but I am no longer a member of that gym.
My at-home yoga uses a mixture of Steve Ross (Inhale) and Rodney Yee videos. I have others but these two are my favorites.

I go to a great studio, however they have different classes with different teachers every day (about 6-8 different options to chose from daily) so it depends on what I am in the mood/have time for.
Sometimes at home I'll just follow a specific program from a book I have (relaxing poses, invigorating poses, bedtime poses, etc). The book is called OM YOGA and I really like it. However I also have about 6 other yoga books, so tend to mishmash them all together. ;-)

Yes, as sappho and Dolores mentioned, I do Kim Fowler's Yoga for Athletes at her studio. It's not easy, and is more core/strengthening (especially geared for endurance athletes) than it is meditative/relaxing.

Great!  I'd love to hear how it is.  I have the Flexibility Training DVD by B. Dorfman and it's pretty dull.  The intro by Paula N-F is the highlight IMHO. B himself is not a really inspiring teacher, and I guess I need the inspiration.
