STORY: I got into triathlons after my cousin did one. The first race I did I placed in the first timers division. I have won several age group awards. My biggest accomplishment to date was Ironman Louisville. I was 131 overall with a time of 10:42:57. I am running the Boston Marathon this coming April.

AMILY STATUS: Getting Married June 2008

CURRENT TRAINING: I am mostly running in prepration for the marathon but i do bike and swim on my cross training days.

THIS YEAR'S RACES: 2007 races Eagleman, Philly Ins Olympic and Ironman Louisville.

2008 RACES: Boston Marathon and some other olympic and half iron races. If your season is ready, list your races, if not, your training goals.

WEIGHTLOSS: I keep a good race weight around 172-175

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTOR: I am person who started at the bottom of the triathlon ladder and worked my way from a sprint race all the way to an ironman. I am a person who believes that with determinatin anyone can accomplish anything as long as they are willing to tri. I want to help people get the most out of this sport since I had people help me.

Hey Mike,

My name is Richard and I was wondering if I could join your group. I have a swim background from high school and a bit of college as well. I workout very regularly (weight training = 5 days a week & cardio 5-6 days a week; swim and run). I am very motivated and excited about my first triathlon coming up in april (it's a sprint) but I don't know much about the sport or how to properly and effectively train for it.

Can you help me out? Please let me know asap!

Sincerely,

Richard.

OK Mike!

I am an official coach potato chick attempting to get ready for the Philadelphia Woman's Triathlon July 6th. Needless to say, this will be my first event. I am scared to death but I started moving my butt and I am on my way to purchasing a bike.

So far for the past two weeks, I have been following the beginners program.

Why am I here? Because I am determined and I don't care if I finish dead last, as long as I know I kicked butt along the way.

Any advice would be greated appreciated. I am kind of confused by alot. I will attach the program I started.

Rich.

as for a bike. If you are serious about triathlons you may want to look at a entry level triathlon or time trial bike. Road bikes are good but it is nice to have a triathlon specfic bike. Let me know what bikes you are looking at and we can go from there.

I would get in a pool. It takes about 6 months to get comfortable swimming if you have not already begun swiming. I would def try and workout 6 days a week. Long bike and a long run. Don't do these on the same day. Brick workouts are good also. I will look at your excel sheet but stay focued so that you can do this.

Hi Mike,

I'd like to join your mentoring group, if you'll have me. I am not really a beginner triathlete. Would this be OK?

I consider myself experienced, but would like to train better and with a plan. My training has been fairly haphazard.

I live in Ithaca, NY, which coincidentally will be hosting the 2008 USAT Sprint Nationals in early August; it's the Cayuga Lake Triathlon. I plan to compete in that race, as well as 4 or 5 others. I may do an Olympic length-race at the end of the season which is a distance I haven't done in the last decade.

I did about 6 triathlons way back in college (I'm 42), then took a hiatus for graduate school and focused on running. Twenty years and four kids later, I'm back into the sport. I had a good 2006 season, doing 5 sprint triathlons. Though I trained 3-4 times per week, I had no real plan and was fairly haphazard. Despite that, I was usually one of the top three performers in my age group. I didn't do much in 2007, since my training was minimal. (We were away on sabbatic for 7 months on the West Coast.)

For 2008, I want to follow an actual training plan that will help me peak for the Ithaca sprint race. I could use advice about planning workouts, and how to be ready for an olympic-length race.

Thanks,
Melissa Smith

i have yet to do a triathlon but i am pretty serious about triathlons and i do plan on continuing to build up the distance of my triathlons :] how do you feel about trek bikes?

i am super clueless at the moment when it comes to bikes... i spoke briefly with my friend who has been cycling for a while and told me that i should not get anything beneath a 105 level bike?

so with that being said... i don't really have a bike and i've been doing the spin class at my gym... it lasts about one hour and i really push myself... i know that i need to get outside and do it... do you think the class will be alright? or should i just shoot for always riding outside?

i was looking at the 20 Week Sprint - 3x Balanced Training Plan and the times for the workouts seem pretty low? i come from a swimming background and a 12 minute swim is not going to really push me at all... also... up until a couple months ago i ran 3 times a week for about a year consistently... and i've been throwing a run or two in here and there since just to keep my body used to it. do you think i should increase the times?

i'm sorry that im so full of questions... i want to work out hard and SMART... please let me know what you think... thanks mike!

how do you feel about trek bikes?

Trek has some good road bikes and they are durable. I have a 1200 myself and it has been good to me. They also have some good entry level tt bikes.

i am super clueless at the moment when it comes to bikes... i spoke briefly with my friend who has been cycling for a while and told me that i should not get anything beneath a 105 level bike?

I think your friend is talking about components here...such as shifters etc......

so with that being said... i don't really have a bike and i've been doing the spin class at my gym... it lasts about one hour and i really push myself... i know that i need to get outside and do it... do you think the class will be alright? or should i just shoot for always riding outside?

I would ride outside when possible use the spining as an alt....

You want to begin to increase distance. Only about 10% a week for the cycling and running.

Log your workouts

If you have an off day and are tired. Rest if you feel rested do a light workout.

Hope this helps so far.

Hey Mike,

I am looking for a group to hang with for moral support. I see that you did the Louisville IM and that is my goal for 2008. I come from a Soccer background and played until I was 40, ACL blowout, picked up Tri’s because I could run, bike and swim with the blown ACL (since fixed) I just turned 50 but in OK shape. 170lbs 5' 10" with a goal of 160 by race time if I don't keep adding muscle mass from swimming. I have completed several sprints over the years but nothing more. 2006 I worked thru a marathon program but never ran one. 2007 I worked the HIM half way (A lot to handle)

I am currently on the BT HIM 20wk and plan to move to the BT 20wk IM in April. This is a big hill to climb and I need all the help I can get. Target IM time is 12 hours but most likely more like 14 hrs.

Have no Idea on the nutrition aspect.

What do you say ..... room for one more?

I think this one was for me...

I will get to a pool hopefully by the end of next week.... check

Will add an additional day to my weekly workouts..... check

I am in the process of purchasing a Scott Contessa Speedster Road Bike. I probably won't have this until February.

I am up to running 5 minutes without stopping (I know laughable but hey I couldn't run a block a few weeks ago).

When swimming try to do some drills. Mix it up 50-100s 150 etc.....

Also work on your breathing and staying calm in the water. This is crucical since the swim is easy you want to conserve energy here.

Running increase 10% mileage a week.

Keep up the good work.

Hello, I am looking for a lot of guidance to do a sprint or two this year. I ran the detroit marathon last year with a couple of smaller runs mixed in. I am going to run the full nashville in april.
I have started to swim and that will be my hardest part, I believe. I am in a spinning class and I do not have a bike, just starting to research. Belong to the local y and pretty much live there,as I go thru a divorce. Have lost 35 lbs and want to loose 10-15 more. Pretty self motivated but probably need a kick once in a while and lots of questions to ask... can you help

Mike, this will be my 2nd tri season and i'm looking for someone to help me with the longer distances. I did a HIM last season and i'm signed up for three this year including IM California 70.3. I need some advice on nutrition and other things related with longer distances. Could i join your group? I don't have time now, but i'll post bio etc later if i can join.

Hey Mike,

I have a hand-me-down road bike that I will be using until I figure out which bike I want... and until I've saved enough money to get it haha... but I was wondering... how should I set up my seat and handle bars? I have no idea where they should be haha.

Thanks!

Mike,

RE: Long Ride Hydration

On the bike for long rides what have you done for liquids. I have room for two bottle on the frame. Should I add two for the rear of the seat. Do you have one between your areobars?

I think that I need 1 lb of water per hour (8 lbs per gallon) Four hour rides?

rich,

can you get to a local bike shop? Without seeing you on the bike it is hard to setup you up.

http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/techctr/bikefit.html#Anchor-...

this is a really good article on proper fitting. Can you get a pic of you on the bike and I can take a look?

When i do my long rides I carry 4 water bottles 2 on the bike frame and 2 on a rear seat cage. Hydration is key. You want to drink when thirsty. How much do you sweat. This is impotant if you sweat more then you need to take more on. I use accleerade on my long bike rides. Make sure you are eating. I used to eat a cliff bar every hour and drink every 15 minutes or so. Remeber you are burning about a 1000 clas an hour during an iornman so drinking a bottle of acclerade and a cliff bar will cover half that and i used gels also. you have to practice your nutrition to see what works.
