Subject: Lifting Newbie, need some advice
I did my first triathlon last August and I'm currently planning on doing a triathlon at the beginning of May, which will give me about 17 weeks to prepare. Unfortunately, over the last few months I haven't done nearly as much training as I would have liked, but I am always pretty active. While getting ready for my triathlon, I'm also interested in strength training, but I know nothing and have only done it a couple of times. I know I will be doing a lot of cardio over the next few months so I don't want to over do it, but I really want to try for flat solid abs and I toned body. My question is, how much strength training should I be doing and what type of lifting should I be doing? My workout program consist of 9 sessions and 6.5-12 hours of training per week. Am I trying to do too much or is this reasonable? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

I would say that adding weight training on top of this volume of training would be a lot of work. Have you worked out with weights before? If so, did you enjoy it?

Yes, I did a couple of years ago when I was on the soccer team and I do every once in a while when I'm working out. I would say I enjoy it as much as any other workout, I liked the goal setting and trying for a certain rep at a certain weight. I also did strength training for tae kwon do, which I enjoyed, but I just don't want to get to the point where I'm doing too much and it's not benefiting my body. I was thinking along the lines of twice a week or something, what do you think?

Didn't want you to think I was ignoring you. I'll give you a really simple plan here in a bit, but I need to go work out myself right now.

When I was able to make it to the gym, this was my weight training 2 times a week.  2 sets of 15 reps for each exercise and you’ll get the entire body.

This is not too bad to start off with.

What's the difference between a bicep curl and a supinated bicep curl? I've always done bicep curls with my hand supinated.

Nothing.  They're probably just differentiating between a regular curl and a reverse curl, which hits a different bicep head and the forearms.
