Subject: Indoor Trainer Tires

I was advised by the people at Computrainer that I should invest in a indoor trainer specific tire.  The problem that I have been encountering is that I ride on 650c wheels and everything that I've been finding are for 700c tires.

HELP !!

Is that just because any trainer burns up the tire or is there something special about computrainer which requires dust free? If it's just to save your good racing tire, any old one which was previously used and has no holes large enough for the tube to protrude through (still stays inflated safely) will be fine. I use my old racers as disposables for the trainer.

I just use my old tires for the trainer as well. I've never encountered a problem as long as the air pressure is good.

I haven't been enlightened into the CT world though.

I have this questions too, so I'm bumping--I have 650s but really want a tire that won't shed that nasty black dust all over my carpet, etc.  When I use old tires, I still get that problem.  Does any manufacturer make the equivalent of the Conti Ultra Sport Home Trainer Tire for 650's (http://www.glorycycles.com/coulsphotrti.html)?

I just use old road tires; never purchased a trainer-specific tire...

I ride on top of a flattened cardboard box - no black dust on the carpet from almost used up tires. And my front wheel riser is a 2x4. No reason to spend big $ to torture myself in front of the tube...

Keep your tire pressure up and you won't have problems with the nasty black dust.

I have never had this dust problem. I just use my normal tires on the trainer. They just dont wear quick enough to make me want to swap out wheels, or especially tires, every time I throw the bike on the trainer.

I have been using my same bike tire on my trainer and outdoors from December until now (500 Miles). I have had no flats or dust or any noticeable tire wear, I do have a 6 dollar continental as a backup, I guess I will pack it away for next winter! I don't use allot of tension on my trainer and keep my tire pressure up. The trainer tires seem like a gimmick!

Oooh, thanks for all the great insight...  I used to have a tire that NEVER shed and wore very hardily.  Then I had a different tire that seemed to "melt" much easier...  but maybe I just didn't have the PSI in the tire up enough either.  Per this article, the tires with less silica (typically in cheaper tires) wear best.

continental makes a trainer specific tire but i seem to still shred those on hillier ride.  i never calibrate so probably am not getting too much resistance on there or something cuz i thought those bad boys werent supposed to shred?
