Oh the joy of taper week before a "big" marathon. I think I like doing impromptu marathons better where I don't put much thought into it beyond, "Yeah! That sounds cool!" But when I'm traveling, taking time off work, spending family money I get all nervous. So today my hamstring is tight, I have a new pain in the back of my knee, and my ankle hurts.

Yes friends, it is TAPER MADNESS! I hate it!

On a good note, got two new runners today! Wahoo! I'm lovin' it!

Slowbee Joe today! But oh well. It's Monday and I had Monday arms. At least I didn't have anyone standing in my lane, or trying to get out while I was swimming.

Roy swam too. It feels good on his gouty leg. Doctor thinks he might have gout. How odd is that? He doesn't have any risk factors, beyond being a little overweight (but that's generally a factor along with diet). He will know when his blood tests come back. I'm glad he's getting it taken care of. It's only been almost a year since it started hurting. (Don't get me started on whining as a way to treat ailments.)

My legs are feeling great, all ready for Chicago. So I know I should be tapering, but I've never been very good at following directions. Decided to run to coffee this morning and back for six miles. While we were there Roy said he wanted to see a movie, so I suggested we just run to Subway and then to the movie.

So we ran to Starbucks and sat and read the paper and talked. Then off to Subway where we had lunch. Headed over to the store for a bit of wandering and some gloves (it was chilly this morning). Then to the movie. We saw Eagle Eye, which was okay. I do wish that directors would understand that action scenes, these days, are so "typical" that less is really more. Do I really NEED a half hour of explosions and car chases? No. I've seen that a million times before, so my brain starts to check out and I'm starting to doze. I want plot, not explosions.

Ran home from the movies and then made a lovely dinner of couscous and leeks with chicken.

Loverly run today! It was POURING when I started to get ready, but had stopped by the time I got out. I love this time of year for running. It's not too hot, it's not too cold. Baby Bear would love it. The fall leaves are gorgeous, and the birds are fact I woke up this morning and just laid there listening to the birds for awhile.

We ran (Roy biked) out to the Casino and around the pretty gardens there, then back to Starbucks. Had a homemade scone and coffee and read the paper for awhile, then finished up. No, I don't do that for ALL my long runs. Do you suppose there's a Starbucks 2.5 miles from the finish line in Chicago?

Taper madness has definitely set in. Eight miles felt like I wasn't doing enough. I'm looking at 2 and 3 mile scheduled runs thinking "Really? Seriously?" My knees hurt. My ankle hurts. But I know it's normal so I'm not sweating it. (Much.)

Oh why am I so slow?
I tell my legs to go.
I wanna be fast.
'twould be a blast.
But they just holler, "NO!"

You know, some people can use pool etiquette. I don't blame them because they don't KNOW the etiquette. It should be required reading before lap swims, though. At the pool I swim in, there are no lane separators so you choose a lane by stripe. Generally people have no issues with this. You swim in the lane you're in. Today a guy I called "Brown flowers" because he had on brown, flowered trunks, kept getting in my lane. It wasn't "sharing" my lane, it was STANDING in my lane. He was obviously a new swimmer, out of shape, so he'd do a length at a time. No problem. Not the most graceful guy in the world, but then I used to appear to be having a stroke so I'm not talking. But Dude, you can SEE me swimming. WHY are you right where I'm going to turn around? Seriously! Every time he'd be down at the shallow end, I'd be swimming along and he'd be standing ON the line, a little to his right, so that I had to either turn before hitting the end, or turn at the corner (I was in the far west lane). Very frustrating.

Then another guy, "Blue Flowers" cuts right in front of me while swimming, so he can climb out. Do you just walk into traffic when crossing the street, or did you think "I bet that lady would like my blue flowered ass in her face as she swims by. Who am I to not oblige a lady?"

If you're in the lane two, you do NOT stand in lane one to rest.

If you are not circle swimming, stay on your side.

If you need to cross an active lane, wait for the person to swim PAST you before you cross, don't try to play swim chicken with them because you're walking with more resistance against you than they have. You may not get past them in time, and it's not fair to require them to slow down for you.

Nobody wants your ass in their face. Ever. Well, at least not at the pool.

Ran 2 miles, walked one. Met a client for an initial consultation, fitness evaluation, and to demonstrate some of the workout moves I've assigned to her. We parked at a coffee shop and talked, then walked to her house which was VERY cool. Nothing like a little exercise before your exercise!

I love being a personal trainer. It's so neat to see people excited about fitness!

Two runs/walks actually. First was a two miler to Lisa's house. Then the second was run/walk with our Wellness Wednesday group. Good times! I sure enjoyed chatting with everyone, and it makes me feel good to provide an opportunity for people to get together and do healthy stuff.
