I'm hearing rumblings from the guys on PV's bulletin board that the upcoming Sequoia requires gears larger than 23T....or it's at least recommended.  One guy rode the Sequioa last year w/ a 23T, but in the end he was sorry he did.  Glad I have a 12-27T cassette.  Despite the hellish climbing, this ride is quite the roller coaster on the downside, from what I understand it's quite fast.

Got a little curious about how much time my hill climbs add to my rides.  I estimated that the ascent to KMR yesterday added about 18-20 minutes to my overall ride, say nothing of the climb up Crystal Springs Road.

  • 3h 59m 32s

  • 15.07 Mi/hr

Forgot to wear the garmin today. Started this ride here at home, and went straight out to Kings Mtn Road. At mile 17 I began my ascent up the 4.33 mile hill. Today, I topped KMR in 36:33, and my total time from the house was 1:43:33, an improvement of 17 minutes over my first ride from home to the top of KMR.

Weekend after next, I plan to climb KMR again, but I'm going to drive out as close to the base as I can and do it with fresh legs in a timed climb.

Rode at Tamarancho today with Loren. Lots of poison oak on the trail, and the trail was generally in need of some maintenance.  It was obvious I hadn't ridden my mtn bike in a while.  My balance on the trails and switchbacks was completely off.  It took a bit for everything to come back to me.  Descending one switchback, I found myself being launched over the handlebars, but I landed feet-side down.  I managed to get airborne a few times, but nearly it bit the big one when my back tire caught a tree root, and it shot me completely across the trail.  Crossed paths with a very young rattle snake, too.  Now, you don't see too many snakes when you're out road biking, do you?  Stopped for a late lunch afterwards

Amazing!  In others news, another one of my mountain biking buddies has been bitten by the triathlon bug. Earlier this year, S bought a new road bike, and recently decided - without any tri-specific training or prior experience - to enter a Half Iron Man.  S performed very well in the HIM about 3 weeks ago - all things considered; considering it was something of a whim, and S had never competed in a triathlon before.

So, I guess my LSD is tomorrow...

  • 1h 00m
  • 19.45 miles
  • 19.45 Mi/hr

Trainer ride; exceptional amount of T/E homework so I felt compelled to get this overwith quickly & retire to my studies. LSD tomorrow, though.

  • 40m 55s
  • 4.50 miles
  • 09m 05s /Mi

What's up with the weather? Sheesh. It was cold and windy outside this AM - feels almost like winter.
