11:00am - Last night I could not sleep, and ended up only getting about 3.5 hours of sleep.  Today our team did a preview bike/run of the Sudbury course.  We started out doing four laps of the bike course (double the race distance), then did an Indian run on the run course.  By the end of the Indian run my calves were killing me, so I sat out while the rest of the team did another loop of the run course on their own.  Afterwards we had a team breakfast at a local eatery.

4:00pm - After lunch we drove out to South Deerfield to meet up with some friends for the afternoon.  One of the activities (which I did not know ahead of time) was a 45-minute hike up and down Mt. Sugarloaf.  Thankfully my wife drove there and back, so I could catch a couple of quick naps in the car.

I forgot to bring my Garmin to work today (Monday) so I don't have the HR or accurate time data.  Will update later.

This morning I did not want to train at all, but on my way to the gym I kept telling myself that it's only 30 minutes.  Once I got in the pool I just cleared my mind and tried to focus on swimming as smoothly and steadily as possible.  I got stuck in the unknown-length lane again so I just estimated my distance based on a conservative pace.

I think that as a time-saving strategy, I should try spending less time in the shower.  Now, I don't mean that I want to be less clean, I just need to take fewer showers.  For example, yesterday morning I got up and took a shower before work.  I swam at lunch, then took another shower afterwards.  Last night I taught swimming class at the YMCA, then took a third shower after that.  Crazy!

1:00pm - Had lunch with my coach, he brought us our new uniforms for this season.  Here's a picture of Kate with her top on (over her work clothes):

9:00pm - Volleyball was fun tonight.  There were not a lot of folks there, so we ended up playing 3-on-3 or 4-on-4 all night.  Playing with three was great, and a really good workout!

12:00pm - My work schedule got moved around, so I was able to swim at 11:00 with kateb876.  Today I focused on endurance - 1 set of 45 minutes (45 minutes = 2200 yards = 1.2 miles = HIM swim leg).  There were a few folks in the pool when I got there, so I had to swim in the unknown-length lane.

1:00pm - Got to spinning class (which is 45 minutes long) 15 minutes early and rode through the end of class.

8:30pm - For tonight's run I did some hill repeats on Indian Head Rd in Framingham.  It takes about 12-13 minutes to get there, I did about 15 minutes of repeats and then ran back home.  On the way home I could feel a bit of soreness in my left shin, presumably from the downhill sections.  But, with Timberman looming large on the horizon I need to work on hills, both cycling and running.

7:30am - I had planned on swimming before work today, but since it's going to be nice out I decided to come straight to the office and sneak out early.  My revised plan for the day:

  • 5:00pm - Yard work (that I didn't do over the weekend because of the rain)
  • 8:30pm - Lap swimming at the YMCA

6:00pm - Finally got the grass cut for the first time this season.  Over the winter my Dad bought me a new mower because mine was dying, and the new one works great.

9:30pm - Lap swimming at the "Y" tonight.  I had planned on doing 2000 yards, so I broke it up into 5x400 since I'm doing Sudbury this weekend which is a 400 yard pool swim.  For the first set I swam at my "race pace" and just barely beat last year's race time.  I'd like my speed to be higher, but in retrospect I've spent a lot more time swimming at an endurance pace than a sprint pace.

For most of the swim we had 3-4 people in the lane, of varying speeds.  I did not get held up too much, but I did get to practice passing others in the lane, which hopefully I won't have to use too much this weekend.  But, I was a bit conservative in estimating my seed time for the race, so we'll see.

By the time I finished my 5x400 I was not yet at 40 minutes, so I did an extra 200 to cool down.
