Getting Sick and Training
BY: Aikidoman on 2008-02-27 9:50 AM
After dodging the bug so far this winter, I woke up with a scratchy throat this morning. It feels like the onset of something.
My game plan is to get lots of rest and fluids. I would like to keep training, of course, as it's my final big push from my first race of the season - but I may have to cut back or drop a workout or two if I'm not feeling up to it.
I'm looking for any kind of suggestions to weather the storm of the bug during training. Like I said, I feel good now, but I can tell it's going to happen in the next couple days. Any tips to nip it in the bud?
Thanks and healthy training......

Lots of Vitamin C. Good luck to you on training through it. It works for some people, for me, it always just made me sicker - so now I just rest and I get over it faster.
Rule of thumb is neck and above you can train (as you feel up to it) below the neck, rest.

I use Zicam when I feel something coming on. It works great on some bugs and not on others. The trick is to use it very early - right when you first feel like you might be coming down with something - and to get plenty of rest. Take a couple days off of training, load up on sleep. There are a couple herbal cold remedies that people recommend regularly. I'm sure somebody will mention them...

It got me. I picked up the flu from the family. Started feeling iffy last Friday. Shrugged it off. Friday night-all aches and pains. Saturday morning, no fever, but off on energy. Went for the longish run (10.1 miles) and started getting the chills around noon. I then proceeded to be laid up with a pretty bad case of flu from then until this morning. Missed long ride Sunday, missed easy run Monday. Missed swim Tuesday. I'm going to try for a run today.
All this 10 days before my first marathon...
My suggestion? Stay away from anyone with the flu. Including family!

I usually try Cold-Eeze (generic works fine) and Airborne when I first feel like I'm getting sick. I'll add Zicam in sometimes too. Those, if started early, usually cut my symptoms down a lot. Feel better!

I just got over the bug. Seems like everybody has had it or has it now. I used Zicam (swabs) as soon as I felt it coming on and it only lasted about 4 days and I never really got it full on. Be careful though, if it is the same bug....it comes with a nasty cough. -

I am going to try the Zicam idea. Never tried it before. Took my first 3 hours after first feeling it and just took a second. Going to go the tablet route. Was not 100% comfey about sticking something up my nose...
Anyone know why they have tablets, mist, and swabs? Are they all as effective? I got my quick run in at lunch so I'm done for the day. Early to bed tonight. I don't seem to be feeling any worse yet, but it usually takes about 12 hours for it to kick in for me. I'll know more tonight/tomorrow morning....
I think it could be the "coughing" version. That is the first thing that's been happening - and I usually don't get a cough. Stuffy head, yes, cough, no.....
Keeping my fingers crossed....

Zicam is good, but I found something even better this year. Dr. Dunner Sambu Guard Lozenges. I have had the scratchy throat a few times this winter, and this has nipped it in the bud:

The flu is running through my office and I will not be happy if I have to miss a race over it. Sometimes working up a good sweat does me good, but sometimes not.

There's been an outbreak of mono on my campus. I'm real scared. The whole "no contact" sports for 2 months is real scary!! -

Much higher absorption of zinc through the nasal tissue supposedly. Never had much luck with tablets, but I have had great success with the nasal version.

x2 on the Zicam recommendation
I purchase the nasal gel, dispense it on a clean cotton swab and swab the inside of the nostril, then repeat on other side. Has worked wonders this winter as I have yet to come down with anything.

Before you go out and spend your cash - a different perspective on Zicam.
IMO, the best remedy is to get plenty of rest, hydrate well, and maintain a healthy, balanced diet.

Yeah, was hoping I'd make it through the season without catching it this year, but no luck. Really nasty bug this year. Started with an early sore throat, then progressed to sinuses, infrequent cough, and lots of aches. I've also been absolutely cooking at night. Not fun at all. -

I was just about to post something like this myself.
I caught some sort of head cold Tuesday night, felt it coming right as I was getting home from a light brick workout.
Usually I bundle up just a little more during colds and just keep going, but this one came with dizziness and severe nasal drip, so I'm rather timid to go out running or biking for a bit.
Aside from Zicam, fluids, and rest, any other recommendations? Or is it just a train through it type of deal, until I get the hacking cough?

Aches, occasional cough now, feverish last night.... I took some asprin at 2:30 when my wife came home and that helped a lot. I could feel the fever going down. We keep our house a little cool at night (around 65 degrees) and the most I could have over me the whole night was a sheet.....
