whats your all out 50 meter swim time?
BY: skipg on 2008-08-21 11:50 PM
After watching all the olympic swimmers over the past couple of weeks it got me thinking, how fast could I swim compared to these fish like people. So I went to the pool a couple of days ago and just wanted to do a 50 meter sprint, the pool is olympic size and set up for long course on fri and sat-so after my warm up, I gave it all I had (no diving) just a strong push and off I went kicking and splashing my way down the lane. My heart is pounding when I reach the wall, I look down at my watch and see 40 sec flat(slow! I know). This got me wondering how the hell can someone swim 100m in 46 seconds, it seems so crazy.
Have any of you tried to do a 50m or 100m TT just to see whatcha got? If so whats the time???

your 'slow' 40 seconds is 6 seconds faster than mine....mine was in a 25yd pool. Push off, far from smooth flip turn, and back....(when I tried an all out 100, I was suffering the last 25....I agree, 46 seconds/100 is whacked -

In pool non block start, yard times (25 yard pool) since no 50 meter pool available:
50 yard : 00:00:25
100 yard : 00:00:55

36 seconds for me -long course meters.
1:22 for 100m
I've always wondered if (relatively) my 100m is too slow or the 50m is too fast

I'm slow (these times were actually set in a swim meet off the blocks too!).
50 yards (I never tried meters on a 50)- 35 seconds
100 yards- 1:21
100 meters- 1:37

My time is 45 seconds. Don't forget those Olympians have the fancy speed suits. Michael Phelps is much taller than most of us so when he dives in he is almost at the end of the 50m. So if you take into account those advantages he would still kick our butts! -

Funny you should ask. I got curious yesterday and did the same thing. It was after a tempo run and at the end of my swim workout, but I don't think these things made a lot of difference.
50yd pool, no dive, no flip turn (haven't bothered to learn it properly yet): 40s. This was faster than I thought it would be, so I did it again to be sure. Same time second try.
I find not only the olympic times, but really any competitive times, to be just hard to believe. It is totally unlike running or biking. I can't run or bike as fast as elites, but I get how they do it, and I can certainly do a lot better than doubling their times. For swimming, not so. It's a total mystery to me.

Okay, I don't feel near so bad now. I thought I was missing something when I was doing 50's in roughly the same time frames as they were doing 100's.
50 - 36 Sec
100 - 70 SecThis morning I did general swimming with 1/2 mile, rest 90 sec and then another 1/2 mile. Averaged 1:52/100 which isn't all that bad either
(no dive, no flip turns)

I swim in a 25 meter pool, so with a push off, and a "semi-successful" flip turn I can do 50 meters 28-29 seconds.

Ugh. I hate 50's sprint. I'm a mid-distance IM'er, so that short crawl stuff always irked me.
Regardless: my best time ever for a 100m long course free was a 58:00 when I was 14yo. That's like a 52 in scy. I can barely do a 55 now in scy, 16 years later. My best fly time (since I was a butterflyer for a while) is about the same as my free time.
In practice, off the wall, I can do 50m long course free on a 40 second interval, making it in to the wall at 34 to 36 seconds. I can do a few 100m free long course arriving at the 1:10 on an all out sprint from the wall (no dive), but I can make 1:18 on a 1:25 interval till the cows come home.
Then again (on an especially unusual day), I (and the other morning Masters swimmers) saw Phelps at our pool last year doing 50m long course fly off the wall in the middle of practice arriving in at like 27 seconds like if it was a stroll down the beach.

I've got a 25 yard pool, so no 50m times. I've never timed an all out 50 yard swim either. But my best 100 yard in that same pool with open turns and no diving (and just using my stopwatch so there is a lag between the starting of the watch and actually going as well as stopping and then stopping the watch) was a 1:17 I just did this year. I was super psyched for that one!
If I dove in, and used flip turns well with proper timing, that may have been a possible 1:10 - 1:15 or so time.

My fastest yard time in college was 21.9 for the 50 and 46.9 for the 100. Now I would probably go 22 high in the 50 and 49 or 50 in the 100.
Unfortunately for me my bike and run are not on the same level. -

I could probably do in the 35 range if I tried. -

Right now, 32 high 33 low....last year I was hitting the wall a finger nail or two under 30. I don't have access to a metered pool, so time is 50yd - push off.
About the same times I was doing in High School

I got curious after the olympics as well. Never swam in any sort of organized fashion before, and had no idea where I'd top out.
Anyway...
25 yard pool, off the blocks, open turn (can't flip turn):
50: 23 seconds
100: 1:01
I think endurance might be an issue.
