Foot Injury - How do I keep up my running cardio without really running
BY: jcoop_00 on 2010-06-09 7:52 AM
I have a badly brused foot (I think, I have not been to the doctor), mainly from progressing in distance too quickly. I did a tri this weekend and then took Monday off. I ran 4 miles yesterday morning and my foot was hurting during the run so I took it easy. Last night it was swollen. I iced and elevated it. I really would like to take a week off of running but my next Tri is on the 27th so I do not want to loose anything I have built in the run over the past months. I will still be biking and swimming, as my foot does not hurt during these activities, but what else can I do???
I have heard of running in the pool but how is that actually acomplished and is that really going to help my foot heal or am I really still not taking the time to let my foot heal correctly. -

Pool running, if you do it right, can be VERY effective. I've run to PRs on virtually no land running. Best plan/description I've ever found: http://www.pfitzinger.com/labreports/water.shtml

That being said, if you're only taking a week off, and you're still riding and swimming (i.e. cardio), you're really not going to lose anything from not running.

I did virtually the same thing 2 weeks out from one of my A 10k races in May. I was able to aleviate pain with a regemine of icing, staying off it as much as possible (it actually helped for me to wear a tennis shoe on the opposite foot around the house, had a normal gait but wasn't waling on the area that was bruised) and got a script for an anti-inflammatory gel called Voltaren from my PA at work. Within a week I was back running and I did very well in my race. Just to make sure there is no residual swelling/bruising I'm stil icing most evenings and after runs or extensive walking of any sort.

just do as much as you feel comfortable with.
I rolled my ankle and it hurt for almost a month because I didn't want to stop training. I took almost a week off from running and just swam and biked and it healed up. Just be careful you dont end up taking yourself out of the next race because of overworking it
Good Luck -
