When to "stop / slow down"?
BY: licpit on 2006-04-27 4:27 AM
I know moderation is the key for everything. With that said, when (at what age) would one end running and take up walking? Does ones cartilidge in the legs really give out to produce bone-to-bone contact? I'm 55, male, very active (running that is), and have others cautioning me against running? What's the answer? Thank you.

If you are at all concerned, I would get a physical done. This will check your heart and lungs, and also give you an orthopedic screening. If the doc's take a standing xray of your knees, they can tell how much cushioning you have between your bones. If you have been running for many years, you might have worn it down to where you have to change surfaces. I would get it checked if you are having pain. If not, "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!"

my ma's mate did the london marathon in 3:48 and he is probably somewhere in the 60 age group.
not sure why you needed to know that but i hope it is encouraging! and his son did 2:56 but that's another matter entirely

My dad is 61 and I can't catch him on the run or the bike. He does the Half Ironman every year. He gets the odd niggle pain every now and again but he is still running strong and not planning on giving up anytime soon.
In fact he was saying he would like his first Ironman to be when he turns 70! I would say like someone else said if it ain't broke don't fix it. If you can run with no problems just keep running
good on you, I want to be like you and my dad when I'm 55 or 61!

My grandfather turned 81 about a month ago and is still a very big skier and tennis player, except he didn't ski this year because he threw out his back (picked up something he shouldn't have at work, duh).
You won't heall as quickly from injuries (you probably already knew that) but, Hell...KEEP GOING!

Get a check-up with your doc and tell him about your physically active life. Stay active for your entire life!
