Cycling in Austin
BY: courtney_leone on 2006-07-05 8:21 PM
Does anyone know of any good cycling routes in Austin, preferably on the north side? I'm looking for something on a easy/intermediate scale, unfortunately
(15-30 miles)
Thanks!

Parmer lane in north austin area has rolling hills at best. Fairly easy riding and has large shoulder. This is from mopac (loop 1) going north, you will pass mcneil, 620, 1431. If you want more of a challenge there is loop 360, lots of hills here and large shoulder, you will see alot of cyclist on this route as well. -

I second what Jamie posted. Parmer and 360 are both easy rides, meaning you don't need a map and won't get lost. I've been noticing a lot of cyclist on Parmer the last month or so and 360 always has cyclists on it. Have a safe ride. -

I wouldn't say 360 is easy....
Parmer Lane is rolling hills, but you'll probably consider them killers given what you thought of Jack's course last year!

You're right, I'll admit it. One of the reasons I thought Jack's was so bad was because that gigantic hill was right out of T1! Plus, there are no hills around here, unfortunately. So is there a less hilly route? I really need somewhere to ride where I won't have to walk my bike up the hills or get hit by a car

Majority of my rides are parmer and 360 area and dam loop (very hilly course). Agree with Dennis that 360 is not easy, has quite of few large hills on it. Out of the two Parmer is definately easier. I live up in Avery Ranch and catch the tail end of parmer and head out north towards 29 and will turn around and head back towards town. Parmer is definately in my opinion easier of the two. When I want to incorporate hill training I make sure that I include 360. I am not too familiar with any flat courses in the area due to where I live. There is the veloway down in south austin, I believe it is a 5k loop dedicated to bikers, rollerbladers and walkers (no motorized vehicles). I would say this fairly easy course and if you head out of the veloway and go south on mopac and turn around at the end and head back to the veloway this is about an 8 mile distance as well, fairly flat but with some minor rolling hills -

Don't remember of the top of my head. But this far out there are couple of really big hills and it is really open as the are extending Parmer (ronald reagan hwy is what they call it this far out) -

My schedule changed for the weekend - anyone interested in meeting up on Saturday (7/15) or Sunday (7/16) for a Parmer Ride? There is a Walgreens at the corner of Avery Ranch & Parmer that might be a good spot to park / meet.
Any thoughts? -

I'd love to go on some long rides but I need to find a REALLY slow, really easy group...I've barely been on my bike since my shoulder surgery and I have a long way to go.
So....give me a few months and then we'll talk

They do a couple of rides in Pflugerville which are very flat. There aren't large shoulders, but there aren't too many cars out that way. There are all levels out there. -
