Tri Suit Ride Up Issue/Questions
BY: patty_b on 2017-03-22 12:43 PM
Hey Everybody my name's Pat and in a couple weeks I'll be competing in my first half IM down in Galveston TX. I recently acquired my first tri suit and after doing some research I came to the conclusion that the Huub Tri Core Suit was best value for the money. The issue I am running into is it feels very restrictive in the crotch area. I am 6ft 1, 165lbs and just tall and lanky in general. I followed the size chart and went with a Large and the suit feels good up top and holds my shoulders down. I think the problem is that with me being so lanky and not a lot of meat on my legs/thighs the bottom portion of the suit rides up and I can feel the stitching digging into the boys. I can't imagine even with body glide that I'd be able to perform at my best especially during the run. I've done a little more research and it seems like getting a two piece tri suit will solve this problem. I was wondering if anyone else had run into this issue and if there are any recommended brands in the $130 ish price range that you all liked especially for tall lanky guys. Also any sage advice in general on half IM would be much appreciated.
Thank you for your time,
Pat -

I would bet your suit is WAY too big for you. I've watched kids who were 6'2 - 6'4 160-170 get fitted in a similar suit and they wore a small.

I feel like Borat every time I put mine on, but it's fast, so whatever.
There's very little that's comfortable about this sport. -

I would contact Huub tomorrow and ask them about your sizing and fit issue you are having. If your race is in a few weeks I'd want to get it sorted out now. -

Sounds to me like the suit may not be tailored for the tall and lanky. Each manufacture kind of has its own fit, like some shoes run narrow, some wide, same with clothes and wetsuits, some short, some tall, just depends.
The fact that you state it pulls your shoulders down and rides up the crotch, sounds to me like its too short, despite being a large. I am 5.11 and 170, I wear a 2 piece, medium bottom and large top. My bottom half is like a 32w, but I push a size 44 chest, so my upper body is still abit stocky.
Your best bet is to call Huub in regards to sizing, perhaps get a different sizing recommendation.
I personally wear Voler FS Pro brand, but I get specialty club pieces through California Triathlon. I have lots of miles of training and 3 Olympic triathlons on them with zero issues.
Here is their tri specific general public offerings: http://www.voler.com/browse/cat3/?cat=mens,tri
I am basically running the Mens Propel Tri short with a upgraded thicker pad for bike rides up to 6 hours, the standard public offering is good for 3-4 hours. Although if you call them they maybe able to upgrade you if you need it. I also run the mens FS Pro Tri Top. See my profile picture.
Hope you get what you need so you can get in critical practice time before your race. Best wishes on your upcoming HIM, I got my first in just about a month!
