Anyone going to do this? I'm thinking about it... just a little hesitant b/c the SOR half I'm already registered for is only 5 weeks after this.
But it may be too good of an opportunity to pass up! Registration is open! -

Seriously considering it...
I wanted to wait till later in the season (like Redman in September) for my first HIM, but this is a great opportunity.
Looks like the registration fee of $175 is good until Nov. 22 - my guess is that it will only increase from there.
It's the same weekend as Topeka Tinman, a race and venue I LOVE. Decisons, decisions.

I am thinking about! June is a nice cool month for a HIM vs. August/September..... The June time frame won't mess with my IM Wisconsin training.
I will decide by the end of the day.
Remember most IM Sanctioned events sell out fast, this event will probably be closed to general entry in two weeks, then you will be stuck paying the community fund registration fee which is double or about $350, so don't wait to long on this one....

I HAD NO FREAKIN IDEA THIS WAS COMING!!!!. I about soiled myself when I saw this forum.
Needless to say I am already signed up and pumped. I will miss Topeka Tinman since I live in Topeka and train at Lake Shawnee about every other day. I will be at the Tinman to volunteer for sure and to cheer everyone on. -

I too am signed up. I'm scared since this will be my first HIM.
I changed from a HIM in Michigan to this one because this one will allegedly be a bit hillier. Oh and the other one was suspect since registration isn't even open yet. So, this one, Steelhead in August and Redman in October. If I finish those it's IM2009 for me.

I'm in......BOY, it's amazing how the opening of an Ironman 70.3 event in your backyard can turn your previously determined 2008 goals upside down!!! -

I'm thinking of booking my hotel early ... like today, so I don't have to stay in some fleabag roach motel. Are the people from KC and Wichita driving up the morning of the race or coming to Lawrence the day before?
I know it's early but I don't like to leave anything to chance when it comes to the hotel in which I stay. Bugs make me itchy.

Since in live in the southern Overland Park/Olathe area, I'll probably just go to Lawrence the morning of the race. There's a state highway K-10 that runs right off of the southwestern corner of 435 (the main loop around KC). From there it's maybe 25 minutes to Lawrence. Even if we have to check our bikes in the day before, I still think we'll stay in KC that night.
If you can find a good place in Lawrence, that's great, but I would imagine most ppl (on BT anyway) will still be in KC the night before. I think the majority of the KC area BTers live around the same part of the city as I do, and it's really not a far trip at all. And traffic shouldn't be a problem. But I guess I can't really speak for everybody!
We'll all definitely have to plan a big pasta party the night before or something.
All the KC BTers are really great btw! -

Tom (climbin5414) and I will probably drive up the day before. Wichita is more like a 2.5 hour drive.
What's usually done for a BT dinner? We talking a restaurant? I've already nominated 2tony to organize... I'll take something gluten-free and vegetarian please

Hey everyone make sure you add IM Kansas to you races, click add race, date, country, state, city, triathlon, 1/2 ironman, search, then click on add after it is retrieved. That way all of the BTr's doing the race show up on the race link and we all know who is doing the race and can do race blogs from that location, it works pretty slick!
Right now only two of us have added the race.

Any idea of what the course is going to look like?? I'm from ND but am interested since this is the closest Half IM to me. Last time I checked Kansas is flat, correct me if I'm wrong tho -

The bike should be rolling hills, a flat Kansas is a false statement. Rolling could be defined as anything with a 1* to 4* slope, long to short, with a mix of long to short flats, some hill sections will have enough down hill to let your momentum carry you 3/4 up the next if you ride them right!
Here is a link to a Motion Based Trailnetworks of the Octagenta ride held in Lawrence, it is not the same coarse but the same general area, around Clinton Lake and I'am sure some of IM Kansas 70.3 will be on some of the same roads.
Hope this helps, btw the water will probably be to warm for wet suits, but bring one along!
