Andyone doing their first HIM or IM in 2011
BY: jdbadger on 2010-09-20 5:33 PM
Hi all - I was just wondering if anyone out there is doing their first HIM or IM next year. I have IMMOO on the schedule. I was planning on a 2 year training period but lucked into an entry so I thought - go for it. I am looking for people to kick ideas around about training and issues for those of us who have some meat on their bones. I have a lot of people in Colorado that I can ask for advice but they are all in the very light category and have not had some of the issue I have being 6'1" and 230lbs. I plan on working my butt off and seeing if I can at least finish the race. Tips and suggestions are always appreciated.
Thanks. Scott.

There are a few Iron distance and half irondistance people in this group (I'm doing my first IM in Florida this year). I would also recommend joining the race group thread when it gets started. I've got a lot of good info on that thread and "met" some other people training for the same race as me. -

Hi,
I live in CO also and am a Clyde. I don't know how much longer I will be, but hey...you never know. Anyway, I'm already registered for HIM Boulder 2011 and am hoping to be able to register for IMAZ 2011 as well. I'm always looking for someone to share ideas with. -

I'm very torn. On one hand, that course was brutal and today (Wednesday) my legs are still reminding me.
On the other, I can't help but think that knowing what I know now, there is no doubt I could train better for this event next year.
On the other hand, I want to train to do my first marathon next year so while I'm at it, I may go ahead and attempt my first IM. See my problem? I don't actually have 3 hands!
At this point, here is what I think I will do in 2011. Bold is a definite.
May 15th Fredricksburg, VA - Marine Corps Historic Half marathon
June 5th Beltzville St. Park, PA - Black Bear Olympic Triathlon (I WILL make this my first <3hr OLY)
July 10th Rhode Island Half Ironman - (visit inlaws while we are in New England)
Sept --- (considering) Rev3 Cedar Point Full Ironman in Sandusky, OH OR a Redo of Savageman
Oct 30th If I can get in on the registration**, I want to do the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C.
** If I cannot get in on the Marine Corps Marathon registration, I can get in to the NYC marathon via work since we are a sponsor.

First HIM next year, thinking Diamondman, Skipjack (sorta HIM), or if I'm drunk when I sign up, Savageman. I'd love to do Vineman 70.3 but I don't think it's gonna fit the budget, and I would prefer a September race. Good luck at IMMOO next year.

LOL I did it as my first HIM thinking that if I could do that, I could handle finishing any of them. Plus it's sort of cool with the whole brick thing. Medals can get stashed in shoe boxes or closets and t-shirts fade and wear but a brick in a road is as close to immortality as many of us will ever reach. I have no fear of doing any other HIM or even shooting for an IM now.
Don't let the hype fool you though. People talk about the bike course but that run course is just as insane. I'll put it this way; there is a portion of that run course which you could not drive up unless you were in a 4x4 or ATV. I'm not exaggerating.

Is it still considered my first if I DNF'ed (not by choice) at mile 133.6?
I still consider this part of the first journey. Mine is just 274.2 to get there instead.

Wow, that very tough! What happened? Heat? Fatigue? Bonk?
When something doesn't go right, it motivates me to do it again with a slightly different plan. Is it that simple in your case? Good luck!

Combo of a few things. May have been my HR was higher then normal on the bike (combo of caffeine, excitement, medication, and fitness level) but what really did me in at the end was back pain on the run. Apparently my core strength was lacking more then I realized. Made for running fairly hard (was hard to keep upright) and hard to keep to my planned intervals.
Plan this year is to lose 40lbs, improve my overall strength, and of course become a better biker and runner. When you are closer to cut off times you risk not making cut-offs if the day isn't going as planned. I'll have a bigger time cushion next year I hope! -

Sorry Debb..IMMOO this year did count as your first Ironman and you should be very proud of your accomplishment. In fact, I am thinking of making you an honorary member of Evil Monkey Multisport. Yes that is the cool t-shirt I am wearing in my profile pic.
So for those of you who are doing an HIM or IM and have some weight to lose or strength to gain - are you concentrating on losing some weight first and then doing a structured plan or just structuring a plan and letting the weight take care of itself? I think I am going to try and build strength and lose a few pounds the next 8 weeks before structuring a plan of attack for the next 9 months. I think the strength (mostly core) and weight are huge issues that need to be addressed before I can see real gains in my running times and endurance. I'll still do bike swim and run workouts but concentrate on some weight lifting and general cardio. I guess I also need to work on flexibility.

My plan is to structure my workouts AND my nutrition and I suspect the weight will take care of itself. Until now, I haven't really structured nutrition so I know that's why I'm stuck at 205. Once I dial in my nutrition I'll probably lose more weight. I'd like to be down another 20 pounds or so.

I have been working on the weight loss as well so I know where you are coming from. I just need to work on weight, speed, swim, bike and run and I will do well in 2011.Actually I'm down 50lbs from when I started so over the winter I'm going to hit the weights and try to maintain my fitness. I really hope to try an IM next year. I admire you just for having the courage to go out and do one. Keep up the great work! When you cross it next year I think you will probably have an even greater appreciation for it. In the meantime, the journey is bringing smaller accomplishments that we shouldn't overlook. Your health is everything!

I'm planning to do Racine 70.3 as my first HIM in 2011. I'm at 6'2" and 220, would like to lose another 10-20 lbs. For me, focusing on diet works better for shedding weight than lifting. I tend to add muscle fairly easily, though, so YMMV. I'm trying to work more on running endurance right now than anything else and more or less letting the bodyweight take care of itself. -

I add muscle quite easily as well. I stayed off the weights for the past year and I can't take it anymore. I will keep doing the tri training but I'm adding weights because I enjoy how it looks and I tend to do well with losing fat when I am doing heavy lifting with it. Besides, if I have to be 150lbs to be fast, I'll take slow and strong. I'm not knocking light and fast.. it's just not my preference.

I don't think that's a bad plan. Half the people on here say weight training isn't that important and that you should do more tri specific stuff instead, but I'm pretty convinced If I had been doing core work I wouldn't have had the back issues I did.
Plus back/arm work helps your swim.

This year I completed my first HIM at Kansas 70.3. I'm signed up for IM Coure D'alene for 2011. I'd like to lose the 20 lbs to no longer be a Clyd, but I don't think it'll happen.
Good Luck to all who attempt the HIM and IM distances this coming year. -

Totally agree with those last couple of sentences! I'm not looking to go below 200, because that would involve losing more muscle than I want to. I'm still doing *some* lifting to maintain, but I meant to say that the main focus is on running endurance these days since that's my weakest area.

Went from 260lbs last february to a consistant 220lb finishing this years tri season!
Hoping to do my first HIM next June.
Have started another serious lighter workout, diet phase, in the hopes of dropping another 30 by then!
Good luck to all!
