GPS device euphoria
BY: agaliza on 2006-07-18 3:39 PM
My wife just got me a Garmin Edge 305 for my birthday, and I must say that as a triathlon training geek, this is the greatest thing since triathlons :-) I love logging numbers here, but with the GPS trainer, I get lots more info. Besides the speed, heart rate and cadence, I also get grades and elevations, calories burned, workout weather conditions, etc etc etc. I also get a virtual training partner! (It keeps track of your fastest time on a designated course). The software it comes with is decent, but I prefer uploading it to motionbased.com. Here's my first workout for sample data:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/episode/view.mb?episodePk.pkValu...
Don't know who here are gadget geeks, but I'm just simply tickled by the devices capabilities. I also love the feature to exporting my routes to google earth. I think as soon as my plantar fasciitis goes away, I'll look to buying the forerunner 305, or maybe just carry the edge 305 when I go running.
I don't mean to hype the company or the product. I just think that for those of you triathgeeks who want more feedback about your workout, this, in my opinion is the best product I've ever come across. :-)
Happy training!

I'm sharing the love, have a Forerunner 301 and it's the best training tool ever. Just learning how to use some of the advanced features, like uploading interval workouts from the PC to the unit.
I'm sad though, because I had to send my baby to the shop yesterday. The socket that the USB/charger cord plugs into had worked itself loose. So far, the customer service has been good, called and got an authorization number for warranty service, the guy assured me that it was covered and would take only 7-10 days. We'll see!

I have been slobbering over the forerunner for months now. The girl at Sport Chalet is probably getting tired of removing it from the glass so I can admire it up close. I think next time Iwill just strap it on and go for a run in the store.

After looking at all the data produced from your ride, I think I am going out to purchase a unit tonight. Hopefully the wife will understand. Not only am I a gadget guy, but I am a stat guy too. Nothing better than finishing a workout and analyzing how you did, and where you can improve. Does MotionBased have a monthly subscription fee for their service?

As far as the wife, it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission.

I'm seconds away from pushing the button as well.
Anyone have any insights into WHO has it the cheapest?
I'm researching the web as we speak. Amazon: $296 for the Forerunner 305. I don't think I'm interested in the Edge model.
Does anyone know if the Forerunner 305 has the same "uploadable" capabilities to Motionbased.com?Yes it does.

I have the 201. Its bulky and loses its signal under trees, etc and doesn't track all that cool info.

My 205 wasnt working this AM (found out the lap button was stuck but fixed it) and I didnt know what I was going to do. Had to go back to the stone ages with gmapping my distances. Motionbased is a very slick tool to pull data. Get it, get it, get it!!

If you're lucky like I was your wife also runs. I don't often buy toys for myself but when I saw an ad for the Forerunner 201 in a magazine I immediately approached my wife and said I want to buy this. Next day I came home with it. I strapped it on and went for a run and when I got home told her she had to try it. Once she did she sold on it. Best toy we have ever bought. I'd like to buy a 301 (or higher) model with the heart rate monitor but there are other toys I still need (indoor trainer being one). -

I was going to pass this off as an early anniversary gift for her....(but really for me).

Download the new training log software on Garmins website. It has a lot of features that the original training log software did not have. Upgrades are free! Another reason I am so impressed with my Garmin. -

They have a free service and a subscription service. The subscription service allows for archival of all your workouts, among other things I haven't yet looked into. Still busy playing with the site.
Also, for anyone shopping, my wife told me she got it from eBay for $290 shipped with the heart rate and cadence monitors. -

I'm a big fan of SportTracks. It's got a funky interface, but if you play around with it and figure out the features, it is really powerful.
I also like that your data is kept on your PC rather than depending on a web service and that it is FREE.

I've been waiting for the Forerunner 305 to come down in price a bit. Really, really want one. -

That's what I really wanted, but given my injury, my wife thought it would encourage me to bike more than to run. I did go running today with the edge 305 in hand today anyways. I think there are quite a few people out there that buy the forerunner 305 and jerry rig it on their bike. -

Was unable to resist. Bought the 305 on eBay for $260. Paid $25 instead of $12 fir shipping so I could have it for my second ever trathlon Saturday.
