Am I missing anything for my 1st TRI???
BY: houston-tri-mama on 2007-05-03 12:15 PM
My first TRI is Saturday. Am I missing anything:
Bike/helmet
swim outfit that works w/ bike and run
shirt and shorts to put on after swim over swim outfit
socks/running shoes
goggles & swim cap
bug spray
hat for bike/run
towel
water bottle
watch
I have a trip to bike shop planned tomorrow to pick up tire repair kit and to have bike tires checked
I already got my race packet so I have my race numbers already to go on bike and shirt and the swim cap was given in race packet
I'm in the water at 708am - should be done by 9am (I'm hoping) - reccommend sunglasses??
Is my bag ready??? Advice??? I'm nervous as all get out!

sunblock, sunglasses, blistershield, capstick (your lips may be chapped after swim).
EDIT: Yes, I recommend sunglasses and sunblock even if it's that early. Just in case.

I recommend sunglasses just for flying bugs
Also, another (cheap) investment could be a race belt. Are you using clipless pedals? Don't forget your bike shoes!
Good luck at your first race & have a great time!!!

I don't wear sunglasses because I don't have the kind you can wear while biking or running, but they would be a nice extra.
I bring an extra small towel and bottle of water to rinse my feet off after the swim - I think it helps a ton.
I also bring M&M's to eat at T2 - I think they help a ton too.
I almost forgot to say Good Luck!!!

CB&I, right? I'll be there! It should be a great race! I'm excited!
Definitely sunblock. I'm an idiot. My last two tris the weather has been cloudy and overcast...so sunscreen was the last thing on my mind. Pretty stupid .

I found this website very helpful. It really helped me to have a checklist. One less thing to think about when you are nervous on race morning.
Oh, and by the way, don't forget to breath, and try to have fun.

Sunglasses (as much to keep bugs out of your eyes as anything)
Sunscreen & Lip balm (skip the bug spray)
Tire pump or inflator that you can take on the bike with you. (Won't do you much good to have a patch kit if you can't refill the tire.)
Nutrition (for before and after the race, you may not want their post-race food) and a quart of drinking water (so you aren't at the mercy of the race for post-race hydration). You might bring Tylenol or Advil and stuff to treat blisters (you'll be in a hurry pulling on socks and shoes which can lead to blisters even though you don't get them training). (Do you need coffee/caffeine?)
Change of clothes, maybe enough extra stuff to do a nice clean-up until you can get a shower.
Water and a towel to wipe your feet and a second towel to stand on (these can both be pretty small)
C A M E R A !! You'll want pics of this first race (and we'll want to see them)!!

Cathleen, if you don't have a race belt for your number I have one you can use. Just let me know and I'll bring it for you. You are going to do great!

The only thing I can add is don't forfget to RELAX nothing will mess you up more in the transistions than being to keyed up trying to move fast etc you will forget somehting in transition or fumble around etc. this is your first race take it easy slow down a bit get the feel of how it goes what the flow is like etc. you will enjoy it more. The adrenaline can be tought to control. Have a blast.

Have you practiced your transitions? I always recommend a full dress walkthrough (several times, even), possibly even soak yourself first to simulate the swim. You'll be surprised at how much you learn doing this.

Are you wearing a trisuit or a swimsuit? I'm a little confused by the "swim outfit that works w/ bike and run" and "shirt and shorts to put on after swim over swim outfit".

I know, broken record, but it's not easy to put clothes on when you're wet.
Also, have you practiced riding/running with two sets of clothes?

You definitely want to practice this transition. I did that for my first tri and it was really hard to get on clothes after I was all wet.

I would second or third the idea not to put on clothes in T1. Only exception is if it is really cold and you use a jacket.
I made my kids practice transitions and I would recommend you try the same...I'm not kidding either.
Set up your T1 area in your driveway. Get in what you plan on swimming in, get totally wet. Now run around a tree 5-10 times so you are nice in dizzy which is very typical getting out of a swim and standing up to run to T1, then transition, get on your bike and ride 5-10 minutes; now come back and do it again and again until you feel you have the timing/order of what you'll do down and where you'll put stuff.
I would also suggest getting a number belt. I put mine on before the start of the tri, roll it up and put it on so the number is rolled up behind me then when I come out of T2 I can unroll it and spin it around..saves time.
I'm a quick T1 & T2 person....I set up my bike shoes open, sunglasses in my helmet, helmet so when I lift up my helment goes on my head the right way...run to transition area, put on shoes standing up while same time sunglasses and helmet and off I go.
Behind my bike T1 stuff is my T2 stuff shoes unlaced with a sock in each, and if I'm bringing drink with me my fuel belt or hand held drink holder.
Other keys is to really get a picture of where your T spot is so you can find it..practice coming into T and finding your spot..count trees, fence posts or whatever to help guide you.
Doing smooth transitions helps lower your time, plus no need to get flustered in this time period. I often place higher as I beat folks in transitions.
Not sure what time sunrises in TX, but if it is dark when you set up transition it can be challenging..so I bring a headlamp or simple is a flashlight.
Bring the camera, a good attitude and soak up the fun of your first tri as it is a great new experience.
