UK BTers...how many of us are there out there?
BY: Adam P on 2006-11-20 11:05 AM
Hi all,
Other than mathsgeek and sappho I don't know of anyone else from merry ole blighty who regularly participates on the forum. Who have we got from the UK out there and whereabouts?
I know there is a UK training forum but it's not very obvious and is rarely posted on.
Also, is anyone planning on coming to the Wombourne Splash & Dash in Wolverhampton on 10th December?

The details are:
Splash & Dash, Ounsdale Sports Centre, Nr. Wolverhampton
Cost: £10.00
400m swim (25m pool) followed by 5k (3.125mile) run
I think it's run by the Black Country Triathletes and takes place on 10th December
Hope that helps!

I'm from this side of the pond! Not planning to go to Wolverhampton I'm afraid but as many events as my lead legs can manage next year. Be good to get all the Englanders together (even the northern ones like Sappho)...

Can I be an honorary UK BT'r? I spent last year in Northern Ireland, and I'm trying to get into post-grad work in Glasgow (and hopefully stay).

Graycat, it will be good to see you at the Splash & Dash if you can make it (obviously though it may be a bit of a trek from your native lands)
Same for you, cando. London-Wolvs is not a journey for the fainthearted! (London AND Birmingham in one day, no fun!) However, will you be participating in any London based races next year? My fiancee is from Hampton so I'm signing up for two of the four sprint races that the Thames Turbo club put on each year. These are held in the Hampton open air pool and through Bushey Park near Kingston.
Of course you can Phoenix...I should imagine we have a lot of cousins from across the pond who are in the same shoes! All are welcome!
That's handy, sappho! I've got to come from the south of Coventry so around 40 miles. Shouldn't be too bad but it will be an early morning! At least, we don't have to mess around get bikes racked up etc.

Hi There.
Well I'm Danish but have been living in the UK for 13 years, so I guess I qualify. I'm just getting into the whole triathlon thing and have only just joined BT.
I have also added another training discipline: DIY! I have a list of 26 DIY jobs to complete before any time can be spent training. This was kindly pointed out to me by my wife, who also kindly pointed out that this whole triathlon thing is a rather selfish pursuit. She's right of course (she always is), so the serious training will have to wait a while. Despite this delay in starting the training I'm still hoping to take place in at least one of the 'Thames Turbo' sprint triathlons next year as it takes place just around the corner from me and is apparently a great tri for beginners. Have any of you guys done it?
By the way. Good to know I'm not the only on this site who knows that pants are a kind of underwear.
That is all.
Jens

Note to self: Read all replies before posting.
I see that you are indeed doing the Thames Turbo triathlons Adam. Which ones?
Would be nice to get some friendly advice.

Hi there!
Yeah, I think you qualify as a Brit by now!
I haven't done one of the Hampton tri's but am looking forward to doing a couple next year. I think the dates are on the Thames Turbo site...
As for a selfish pursuit, I find if I don't get out there on the road or in the pool I become a real trial to live with. My fiancee practically insists I keep training!
Anyway, welcome to BT!

I'm up for the Thames Turbo ones as long as they cater for all standards. I say 'all standards' - I only really care if they cater for newbie's who will still consider their 'sprint' something of an endurance event….

Hi Cando.
Check the Thames Turbo website: http://www.thamesturbo.co.uk/memberforum/portal.php
I've seen them "racing" last year. There were ladies of a certain age taking part on old Raleighs with baskets on the front, so I think it's safe for anyone to take part. (They probably still averaged 30 mph on the bike leg though!!!)
Mind you, there were also some very fast, lycra clad, shaven legged, carbon biked, super fit people but it is a staggered start based on your swim time with the "shaven bunch" starting first, so you/we needn't worry about them.
Hope to see you there.

Yeah, they are very wide in their participant base. I knew a guy who competed in one last year but got completely battered the night before and only had 3 hours sleep. He said once he got on the bike he found it really heavy going and ended up being one of the last to finish. It later transpired that one of his rear brake pads was rubbing on the wheel slowing him down the whole way!

Chris Tree is not only a UK BT'er, he's also the longest active BT'er we have, with the exception of Ron. He's user number 15!

Thanks for the mention marmadaddy!
I hadn't seen this thread before! Its good to see so many UK BTer's, I know there are alot more though!
Despite being a member of this site for a while I have never come accross another BTer at an event before...
May be we should get a list of UK BTer races together...

Good to meet you, Chris. It can't be easy finding handy races right down in Kent there. Do you commute into London for races at all?

So is this!
BTW...it's great to see all the UK BT'ers. We probably won't run into each other soon, but it's cool to have the international presence on BT. I hope it keeps growing

Well, my fiancee has family in Kansas City, Seattle, New York & Phoenix so we're planning on maybe coming over for a holiday in the next year or two. (Who knows? I could sneak a race in whilst I'm over there!)
