Overall Rank = 20/648
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 2/48
Pre-race routine:
Got up at 3:50am...for the third time. Had got up at 1:30 to go to the bathroom, and then woke up at 2:30 ready to go. Somehow got to sleep again. Very anxious about kicking of the season, I guess. Ate a Banana, had my clif bar, and went to pick up my buddy from his hotel in Janesville (my parents house). Drove up and arrived early enough to preview some of the bike course and get a premo spot in transition.Event warmup:
Talked with some BT Donkeys and some of my college friends that were doing the race. Went for a 15' warmup run on the course. Body glided up and realized I didn't have enough time to do any bike warm up. No big deal, as I headed for the water to do that warmup. Got out of the water, met up with my wife who made it in time for the start. Took some pictures, and waited for our wave to go off.
Swim
Comments:
This was a good swim. Not great, but good. I had a perfect position on the inside and just went with it. Was hoping some rabbit would appear, but that never happened. Swim effort seemed a little harder than what I ended up with, but never complain about being 1st out of the water in my wave! What would you do differently?:
Nothing.
T1
Comments:
Very good T1. Could have been a little quicker as I stumbled a bit with the new wetsuit and I mistakenly put on my sunglasses before my helmet..which makes a difference with the aero helmet being so tight. Minor details, though...maybe 10 seconds tops lost there. Bike start with shoes in clips was flawless and good start to the race as there was a hill coming out of T1.
4/48 in AG.What would you do differently?:
Not much. Rip the wetsuit of more agressively, and put helmet on before sunglasses.
Bike
Comments:
Nice bike. I hammered this pretty good. I was spinning around a 92 cadence for most of the race. I passed a ton of people and don't remember many passing me that I didn't pass back. Secretly wanted to get around 23mph, and got near that. The bike is definitely improving and have a ton of time to improve on that some more before IMOO.What would you do differently?:
I hammered pretty good. I think that is all I had on this day.
T2
Comments:
Good T2. Racked the bike, helmet off, shoes on (no socks), grab hat, visor, and Garmin. Off to the races. Legs felt like jello, but just jogged through the transition area.
5/48 in AG.What would you do differently?:
Nothing. Pretty quick, methinks.
Run
Comments:
Very good run for me. The legs felt wobbly the first 1/2 mile, and then I got a rhythm going. Nice to see each mile got faster. I knew I was in a pretty good position AG wise since they had the numbers on our calves. I was looking for jszat, knowing he was running sub 6s behind me somewhere. I made the turnaround and saw him about 1/2 mile behind me. Quick math told me I should be able to hold him off. Dude looked fast and effortless for sure. I just used that to keep moving b/c I did not want him to catch me.
I got a side stitch with about 1 mile to go, but just battled through it. Kept running, but I knew my form was breaking down a tad. Good mental and physical effort. What would you do differently?:
Just keep working on my run. I have improved a ton here and will continue doing that. Was my worst category of the 3, but no way would I complain about a sub 20' 5K (even if it was a tad short). No way. Some fast runners out there today.
Post race
Warm down:
Met with my wife. Watched everyone else finish. Drank my endurox, had my breakfast burrito and orange/banana. Met with all the donkeys and took some photos. Good to talk about the effort. Probably should have went for a jog to loosen things up, but didn't feel it.What limited your ability to perform faster:
Not much. There is still room for improvement. I did put in over 200 miles in the previous 8 days and really didn't taper. So very happy with that effort. Only did one or two bricks beforehand, so I think my legs will fee better next race.Event comments:
Great race and well organized. Very cool venue and the people are great. Definitely will do this again.

Aye, fight and you may die, run and you'll live. At least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!

Very stellar, complete race. Looking like a great year and I have a sneaking suspicion that you are going to do pretty well at that little race in September. Great seeing you again.
