Overall Rank = 271/727
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 36/68
Pre-race routine:
I was completely discombobulated. Even though I woke up at 5am, I still was so disorganized. Plus the race was in a totally different place than last year and it seems that most people didnt' realize this. UGH.Event warmup:
Not much. I was running around frantically trying to get my bike into transition, get everything set up, and get my race number and body marking taken care of, so I guess that was my warmup.
Swim
Comments:
I was gonna wear my bike shorts under my wetsuit but the water was warm and I was already sweating when I got finished with getting my bike set up so I said forget the wetsuit. So I wound up swimming in my bike shorts. This could have had something to do with my slowness. Weird thing though. I passed two elites in the water. Their wave had gone off 3 minutes before mine. I was like "what's wrong with you? Must be a good cyclist/runner!"What would you do differently?:
Not much. I'm sure I could have pushed harder, but I was happy. My breathing was great, my face stayed in the water, and I only turned over to backstroke for a minute to catch my breath after the initial craziness. My wave was 140 people, it was pretty crazy.
T1
Comments:
This T1 included a .6 mile run from the beach to transition. The timing mat for transition was at the water exit. I've always wished they'd do this...now they have! I dryed off my feet (no time to fill tub before race due to lateness and craziness) put my socks and shoes on, grabbed my bike, and put my helmet on. Then I just ran with it and hopped on. Probably my best T1 to date. What would you do differently?:
Nothing. Great transition. Just found out (4.17.06 2100) that the .6 run was part of the total 4 miles at the race. Poop.
Bike
Comments:
I had a great ride! With an average speed of 22+mph how could I be anything but happy!! They need to do something about those roads out there though, it's like riding on paved gravel. OUCH!What would you do differently?:
Not forget to drink more. I only took a little bit of Gatorade at about mile 6 and that was it.
T2
Comments:
Just rack and go. This T2 would have been faster if there weren't 40 rows of bikes to run past. I saw Terri and started talking and forgot to take a swig of Gatorade before I left. What would you do differently?:
Not forget to drink before leaving T@.
Run
Comments:
I passed 15 people in my age group on the run. Two of them were in the last half mile. Had a good run except for the fact that the last two miles were like beach sand. It was very tough on the legs. I think I may have done something to the toes on my left foot. I took water or Gatorade at every drink station on the run course because I was so dehydrated from the bike leg. What would you do differently?:
Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:
Lots of water. At least a quart and a half in the first hour. I was very dehydrated from not drinking enough on the bike and in T2.What limited your ability to perform faster:
Hydration, nerves from being late, swimming.Event comments:
I had yet another PR here. My goal was to beat my time from Chilly Willy...same course, 19.05mph, 31.30 split...and I did! My runs are staying consistent. Last year at every event my bikes got faster and my runs got slower. This year my runs are staying where I want them and the bike times are getting better. Now I just have to work on the swim. I'm pretty happy though, since my swim time from Suncoast was almost as much as this one, and this one was twice the distance.
The race organizers need to be more specific about location when this race has been held in one place for however many years and now they decide to change it. MANY athletes pulled into the place where they had it last year and were confused when no one was there. Part of the reason I was late.
Still though, I was really happy about the outcome. It was a grea race and I had a good time. I met some cool people. Terri came to watch, and after the race I treated myself to a nice pair of Boston Bill sunglasses that go with my trigear. After Terri left, I spent some time at the beach, it was a gorgeous day! The water was beautiful, and I felt all cool with my body all marked up!!!
EDIT: Just had to change the run split. Damn that really sucks. Here I thought I had a great run, and I really had a sh!tty one. UGH. REAL BIG DOWNER. REAL BIG.

Great Job!!!! You gotta love a PR!!!!
Must be something about that location.
I did the Publix Family Fitness Rollerblade Race and 5K there last year and none of us could find where the race was set up until the last minute.
I will pass on the beach run, hope your toes are ok. -

I know I'm gonna sound like a party pooper but you didn't run a sub 8 min mile.
That run was only 3.5 You and I both ran the same time within secs. More
like an 8:25/mile on your part. Please don't shoot the messenger.
It was a great job none the less. I'll see ya at the Sharks in Sarasota.
The report on the same race.

OH well gee that sucks. Way to ruin my day! Not you, them. Sheesh.
EDIT: Man now I'm really pissed. I wish I'd seen that before, there it was, at the top of the results...T1, includes .6 mile run, total run 4 miles. Completely misread that. I don't know if I'm freaking blind or what. F*^&!!! I feel totally defeated. I went from having one of the best run splits, to having the WORST one. This does NOT help my confidence. Now I feel like I suck. Hmmph.
Thanks for the info though ty...I guess it needed to be said. Although PMing me might have been better! LOL
But thanks for the accolade!

Dude,
I'm so sorry, I publicly apologize, your right I should have pm'd you. I didn't
find out about that difference in run distance til I was standing on the beach and
the announcer goes, "Oh by the way, the run to t1 counts as part of your run"
Gee thanks a lot guys! I came all the way from NJ to do this 4 mile. Serious!
I rented a house with my bro in saint pete. My buddy came from OHIO!
When we picked up the goodie bag we were totally blown away! Only a water
bottle and gel pack for an $80 buck entrance fee!!!
I've done only sprints to date and I wanted to bump up the run distance just a little.
Oh well. So much for that. But man..anything under 9:00/mile is sweet! imho.
I think I saw you signed up for the shark in sarasota right? Me too. If you ever
want a running buddy, call me. I'm in a rental house over near Snell Isle. We'll
get our run into sub 8!

No prob man. I may have to come down that last week before Sarasota and get that run into the sub 8 range. I know it can be done, my usual run times (in running races) are low 7's. My last 5K was 21:55. I can do better than I did Saturday. I do appreciate the info, even if it hurt! Anyway, thanks for the offer, I just may take you up on that!

Being from NJ I couldn't believe people were wearing wet suits. It was like a bathtub.
But then I remembered how when I did an 13 yr stint in FL, my blood got as thin as
the vodka I drink, and thought "oh yeah, now I remember"

I feel ya man, I'm originally from NJ too...Bergen County...and I remember how cold the water is up there compared to here. I of course forgot this last October when I went bareback in the gulf at that same venue and the water was 68 degrees. Had I moved here recently, that water would have been beautiful to me. But since I've lived here for seven years now, I thought it was like ice. Funny how that happens! I think the water was gorgeous on Saturday. Any warmer and it's too hot to swim hard.
