Pre-race routine:
Wake up call 0430. Coffee, two granola bars and two bananas. Walked down and set up my transition area, then went back to the hotel room and filled my water bottles. It was nice having the race at the hotel where we were staying.
Swim
Comments:
Good swim for me.
T1
Comments:
Took a little longer because I put on bike gloves. Pretty long run from the swim exit into T1, maybe 300m.
Bike
Comments:
THe roads were fairly rough on Key West, but once we got out onto US1, not bad. Pretty windy day. 20-25mph, but not too bad as they were a headwind going out, so we really flew coming back. I saw 30 mph several times.
T2
Comments:
Forgot my gloves were on until I was out of transition. Stuck them in my race/number belt. Worked pretty well as I didn't have to mess with taking them off in T2.
Run
Post race
Warm down:
Bagel and an after party with free beer! Did I mention FREE BEER?Event comments:
Nice race. Great location, nice resort. Could have been a little better organized at packet pick up by having all the numbers in a single envelope for each racer instead of having the volunteers dig through stacks of numbers, but my favorite race so far in the last three years of racing. I liked it being on Saturday, so we could make a fun weekend out of it instead of having to pack up and leave right after the race.
Swimming 00:28:12 | 1640 yards | 01m 43s / 100yards Age Group: 0/37 Overall: 0/294 Performance: Suit: Sleeveless shortie Course: Kind of a rough triangle. A little choppy, but no current. I was worried we would be swimming the long leg of the swim against the current because it was against the wind direction, but no problems. Water was shallow. I think I could have stood up at any point of the swim, but I didn't try. Suprisingly cold water, maybe 68? I never did hear what the official temp was. Start type: Plus: Water temp: 0F / 0C Current: Low 200M Perf. Remainder: Breathing: Drafting: Waves: Navigation: Rounding: T1 Time: 05:12 Performance: Cap removal: Helmet on/

My favorite was the section on the Naval Air Station. At least 15 F-18's took off during the time I was on the station roads. Good Race Report. I am glad I signed up for this race last minute. Swim was difficult with the head on current, but not to the point that it was impossible. I would rather it have been 4-6 foot swell, where you can time the breaching a bit better, but I digress. Bike out was difficult, but going through the Navy base was really cool with planes flying overhead, and then seeing Macca back there. He made it look so easy! Glad you had a good race...Have a good holiday season.

Overall, I enjoyed the race. However, I had trouble with the swim since there were few buoys to guide us and we swam directly into the sun. Hard to stay on course. Stopped by Key Biscayne this morning and raced the 2575 and they had buoys ever 100 yards. Much easier to sight and follow. -

i enjoyed getting to crash the casa marina beachfront
TAKE *THAT* RICH PEOPLE
plus the free beer. even if it was michelob.
plus the wetsuit strippers. can we have those every race?
plus i biked off the road and almost fell over while watching fighter jets take off from the naval base.
i wish there were more buoys, or they were bigger or somehow more visible. i spent a lot of time sighting. or maybe that was just me making excuses to take breaks. question for anyone with ocean swim experience: i figured this was a very calm ocean. how much stronger do ocean tides get?
just got back from FL. i tired and should go to sleep. :P

Sweet great race and report. I hope to get to do this one of these years. The wife and I love KW, got married there and go back pretty much once a year. Usually in Jan or Feb, though.
