Triathlon - Sprint
Total Time = 1h 18m 23s
Overall Rank = 73/317
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 2/20
Pre-race routine:
Arrived early, 6am, just when they opened the gates. Got good parking spot. Had plenty of time to setup, warmup, etc. Parking filled up by 6:45, so good to arrive early.
Prehydrate, setup, T-10 minutes gel and water, then sit quietly until wave is called.Event warmup:
5 minutes of light jogging.
Swim
Comments:
Steady swim. What would you do differently?:
Train more.
T1
Comments:
Wetsuit half off during jog into T1. Then lost focus for 10 seconds standing in front of my bike. Finally threw down goggles, stripped wetsuit, grabbed helmet, stuffed feet in shoes, grabbed bike and ran. Some traffic in the aisles inside T1.What would you do differently?:
Recite mantra when coming out of swim "goggles down, suit off, helmet on, shoes, bike, go".
Bike
Comments:
Rode in aerobars 98%, except when climbing. Did good to go at moderate pace the first 5 minutes to get heart rate down, then gradually increased effort. Did good to remember to eat gel at the turn off Hwy 16, about 2/3 through bike course. What would you do differently?:
Train harder.
T2
Comments:
Nailed it. Passed 2nd place AG competitor in T2, who had passed me on the bike.
Run
Comments:
Good prehydration, good on-bike hydration, cool weather = I didn't drink anything on the run and didn't need any. I ran 7:12, 8:00, 7:00 miles. Didn't fade in mile 2, but was working the hills. What would you do differently?:
Train on running on hills.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:
Focus on intensity on the bike. I haven't done a sprint in a while and I'd forgotten how it requires keeping you nose to the grindstone. Near full gas, all the way.Event comments:
Very good event. Perfect weather day. I mis-read the preliminary results as posted and thought I was 4th. Turned out I finished 2nd! I should have stayed for the awards.
