Pre-race routine:
Woke up at 5, although it was a rough night's sleep. Ate a banana, some almonds, and one slice of bread. I had everything set up and the bike in the car already, so it was an easy departure.
Left at 5:50 and got to the race at 6:30. Met Steve M. in the parking lot. Ate half of a power bar about 30 mins before the start.
Decided to fill the aerodrink with Gatorade endurance to help practice for IM NC 70.3.
Event warmup:
No warm up. The lines at the bathrooms were too long.
Swim
Comments:
When I started swimming I felt pain on the bottom of my foot, so I knew I must have cut it on something as I was entering the thick mud before the start.
It was the easiest swim to the first bout I have ever experienced. I started towards the outside, but not extremely outside. There were two guys close to me at the start, but I was able to get past them and swim without contact. Overall, I did not get bumped or pushed, even at the bouys. It was kind of strange. What would you do differently?:
Not much. I am happy with the pace give the energy expended.
T1
Comments:
Good, quick transition. First in my AG and 31st overall.
I'm feeling pretty good about my ability to move quickly through transition. What would you do differently?:
Not much. A small issue getting into one of the shoes, but overall it went well.
Bike
Comments:
Pushed it a bit, but did not go too hard. Wanted to save some for the run. Tried to keep the power below 105% FTP.What would you do differently?:
Not much.
T2
Comments:
Moved quickly and felt good.
2nd in my AG and 60th overall. What would you do differently?:
Not much. Move faster.
Run
Comments:
Felt pretty good. Was passed about 2/3rds into the run by the guy who ended up taking first. I did not have enough to keep up with him.
Still feel like there is a lot of improvement I can make in the run. What would you do differently?:
I was pretty happy with the pace, although I feel I could have done better with a bit of a taper.
Post race
Warm down:
Gatorade, water, crepe with Egg, Ham and cheese.
Walked around a bit.
Found out that I did cut my foot when I took off my running shoes. Strange how I did not feel it the entire race, but I t began to get uncomfortable when I switched to sandals. What limited your ability to perform faster:
Fatigue from Half iron training. No taper at all.Event comments:
The Jimmie Johnson Foundation puts on great races. Their participant numbers seem to grow for each race while other races are seeing dwindling participant numbers or even being cancelled.
The races are well organized, have tons of volunteers to help, and the post race food is fantastic. It also helps that the proceeds go to a good cause.
I highly recommend JJ Foundation races.
