August - 2nd Annual Boy's vs Girls Swim / Run Challenge !!
BY: devouahy on 2007-07-31 11:10 AM
All right all, a few months ago, we had an ever more fun Challenge than the Boys vs Girls Challenge. Since we are just completing a bike challenge, and the summer has reached most places (unless you are in the Southern Hemisphere) , I would propose to resurrect this challenge with an additional part of Running and make the month of August as “Boy’s vs Girls Swim / Run Challenge”!!!
It is very simple, the loosing team members will have to change their avatars to photos of themselves in their Speedo and use that avatar (assatar!) for the month of September.
How do I set my goals: Count how many swim / run days you have on your plan for the month of August. For instance, if you swim / run every M-W-F’s then you would have 16 swim / run days on you calendar. Now multiply that by the distance (meters/yards and miles, all the same for this purpose) planned on your schedule, and that would give you your total for that month. If you have any planned down-time (vacation, relative visiting, etc&hellip
Boy’s vs Girls, make sure you account for those lost days by lowering your goal.
Swim / Run Challenge
Rules & Terms
Rules / GuidelinesThis is a challenge to promote the attainment of a specific swim / run distance goal. Any distance over goal (over 100%) will be tossed out for the purposes of calculating the winning team.
- Teams are gender specific
- Please announce your participation and stated swim / running goals for the month of August (time or distance, doesn’t matter) within this thread by August 7th.
- Pool swims, races and open water swimming apply toward goal attainment. Kick board, paddles and/or fin drills – they all apply. Open water swims must be measured by a GPS type of device, objective measuring system, or by a sponsoring swim race. Or eyeball and just be fair about it.
- Run on treadmills, track, roads, dirt trails, etc… all apply toward goal attainment. All open road / trail runs myst be measured by a GPS type and/or Goggle Earth methods.
- Each team will pick a Captain and the Captain is responsible for collecting the weekly swim / run distance totals from their team members, and reporting said distances on this thread (attach spreadsheet – “Donto” has offered to create one for us (Thanks for stepping up on this).
- Participants must blog their swim and run training. If it’s not blogged, it didn’t happen for the purpose of this Challenge.
- For the purpose of collecting weekly totals, please report Sunday through Saturday training.
- Final numbers will be independently audited and verified at the end of the challenge.
- Have fun and enjoy getting faster and in better shape
Calculations will be a combination of & of team members who reached their goal + final percentage of aggregate team goal attainment. In this way, both individual goal attainment and team effort carry weight and it also levels the playing field for teams with fewer team members. It will work like this:
- Calculate the percentage of team members who reached their goals
- Calculate the aggregated team goal attainment average (throwing out anything over 100%)
Average these 2 numbers. The team with the highest average of these two numbers wins.
Terms for Losing TeamsLosing team members must change their avatar to a photo of them in their swimsuit. This avatar must be displayed for the entire month of September.
Other Legally Binding Stuff:- Smack talking is not mandatory but certainly makes things a little more interesting.
- Please don’t take the smack talking personal. If you find yourself feeling like you’ve been slighted, have a cookie then post a zipy comeback or just say something like “You’re a booger ha!” You’ll get cheers for being a good sport. Or go for a swim and cool off.
- As with all challenges, this is an honor system, self-reporting challenge.
The ultimate goal is for you to meet your goal and improve your swimming and running skills. That’s what it’s all about. Oh, who am I kidding – the goal is to see the boys or girls in their assatars! That, and a little smack talking. Have a great swim and a great run?
Let the fun begin.

How do you feel about people participating in they are only going to swim? I'm not allowed to run this month due to injury, but I can swim all I want.

This challenge is open preferably to both swim and running. But if injury is preventing from running, and I know swimming will not hinder anything as it is usually refered as rehab, then your in. Just give distance goals. Thansk. -

I'm in. I'm a girl. We rule the world.
Land running miles: 50 (too complicated to add in water running? I think so)
Water swimming yards: 30K (I do very little land swimming, so that ought to be right)

Not at all, you could change your running goal to time instead of distance, Minutes or Hours. Change 50 miles to an estimated time equivalent and add in the water running time for your run goal total.

After being on the losing assatar team in June, I expect (no, demand) that the girls put on better performances this time. I deleted that last pic off my computer and have no intentions of taking another one!
Swim: 18000 yds (mostly OW - our pool is closed for repairs through most of August)
Run: 50 miles
This is a more ambitious swim total for me, but I definitely need the incentive to get in the water.
Girls Rule! Thanks for dropping me the e-mail, Dev. -

Sorry ladies, I don't know how to tell you this...but I'm kind of a big deal! And my library smells of rich mahogany, and I play a mean Jazz flute. So get the camera ready for a nice and sexy snapshot of yourself in a Speedo! My totals for August are as follows:
Run: 7h - 60 Mi
Swim: 6h - 18,500 Meters
You can touch me if you want...first one's free...if you have to ask how much the second touch is...you can't affort it.

Chris, we're going to mop your mahogany floors with you! The boys are going to go out too hard, hurt themselves and have to limp to the finish come August 31. Girls train smarter!
I have a crazy schedule this month, but will shoot for:
17K swimming
40miles running
