Crappy Winter Weather Challenge 2011-2012
BY: wgraves7582 on 2011-10-15 8:39 PM
Well it is getting close to that time and we have had some cooler weather so I thought I would throw this out there. Time for the 2011th Annual Crappy Winter Weather Challenge. Our deep ancestors never kept score they just moved about and the fittest was deemed victor every April 1st. So to keep in the time honored tradition - those of you in the cold regions of the world get out your tights, slip on your gloves, cover your ears with a nice wool hat and score some points!
Since Mukmukantuk Jakratakat won the very first challenge 2011 years ago and no one has repeated since who will dethrone last years champion of champions, victor of victor, ice person of ice person - yours truly Me
. Will Lenny run weekly 100 milers, Will Darren run weekly 100k's, or will someone come out of the snow and destroy all of our chances. Is there a difference in Centuries - yes there are - 100milers and 100kilometers but we honor both with valor and gratitude that we have conquered yet another crappy winter weather challenge!
Here is scoring format:
Scoring will be on page 2 of the document once it is set up and also a multiplier at the bottom to just add time and points and it does the math for you and here:
Wind factor
light winds (5-10 mph) 1 Point
11-19 mph 2 Points
20+ 4 Points
Temp factors
30-35 .5 points
25-29 1 Point
15-24 3 Points
1-14 5 Points
0 and below 8 Points
Precipitation
Drizzle/Light Snow 1 Point
Medium Rain/Snow 2 Points
Heavy Rain/Snow 3 Points
Bike Multiplier - 1 point for outdoor ride sub 40 degrees
Polar Bear Challenge 5 Points
Suck-o-meter scoring
Time in minutes x (Temp mult+Wind mult+precip mult+ Bike mult)= Suckitude scoreSpreadsheet will be put up in a week or so but if you want to start the chatter feel free.
For my warm up I am heading to Jackson Hole, WY the 26th-30th of October and hope to return to Buffalo with my Mukluk cockpit revamped and 2' of freshly packed snow on the ground. Mid-November will find me in Colorado so who knows and I am planning on a winter visit to Minnesota where I will ride my bike 12 hours in sub zero weather because that is what we do for fun!!!
See you soon!

Hi ya Bill - you know, I was just thinking "Where is that Crappy Winter Weather Challenge as it is starting to get chillier".
Thanks for starting this up. For the first time (in my history), I will attempt outdoor riding on my hybred bike that I've outfitted with fatter tires. I look forward to riding around on some hard packed snow and hopefully don't wipe out on some ice. I did some reading on what to expect/how to ride etc.. in the snow so hopefully I don't land in too many snow banks. LOL
Enjoy WY.

Yeah! If I could jump up and down I would! With a broken toe it's not really wise or recommended by my doctor
ONLY 4 more weeks!
Thanks, Bill, for doing this.

oh man, just the motivation I need to start some marathon training. Might have to bump up to the 85 mile plan if I am going to compete with someone out for 12 hour snow bike rides.

So I should be alerting the Coast Gaurd that I will be swimming, not drowning, and that they do not need to come rescue me.
I plan on giving you a good run for your money this year, as long as our Indian Summer doesn't return. I have changed jobs in the last couple of months and find myself with all kinds of new training time and as a result I am stepping up next years race schedule and have managed one podium finish since the change. Kind of nice to be back up there after years away so I think I will be working to place a few more times.

Will anyone mind if I ride my stationary bike outside since I am injured with a broken toe and my bike perished in our recent garage fire?
It's too dangerous to actually ride a bike for me. Believe me, I did it already. I think it will be under 40 this week in Iowa

Woke up at 5:30 wondering what the temperature was.
by 6 I was moving around and my dh took the bike out for me. At first, he thought I was actually going to ride my bike and not the stationary one. He asked me to please wear my yellow vest since it was still dark out. I told him I was planning to ride my bike in the driveway and if he really wanted all the neighbors to see me, then I would!
People in Iowa look at you very strangely when you get excited about the cooler weather coming!
Have a great one fellow Crappy Winter Weather Challengers!

Training for a January marathon will keep me doing long runs for a couple months. After that I need to take it easy for a couple months. Maybe I will need to get the bike out in January to keep pace with Bill, although I won't be doing 12 hours on the bike.

I think you get the wind points, just not the bike point.

I love this challenge! Last year I had to drop out coz I trained with the hubby who got off the couch and into the gym. But this year, I think I have him talked into biking in the cold weather. We are planning on the winter triathlon series together as a relay team so he will need some chill time!!!!

I am seriously considering returning to the Big Foot Snowshoe race in Traverse City this year after a few years off, so I will be doing quite a bit of snowshoe training in the worst weather possible, Last time I raced they had to send out Search and Rescue for three people who got lost in s surprise snow storm.

Sing with me now, it's the most wonderful time of the yearMitten stater checking in here. Already running in the mid-30s in the morning, and I'm in the south part of the state, so maybe I can keep up with the big guns at CWWC this year. The weather forecasters predict an EPIC year of snow and cold. Doesn't that just cheer our northerly hearts?
This year I'm treating myself to some running snowshoes and as many miles as my legs can take me through the powdery deeps in prep for a 50k in January in Grand Rapids and hopefully a 50 miler in the spring.
Charles, I did the Bigfoot snowshoe race in TC last year and it was a blast. Hopefully see you there this year.

Wow! A 50K in January, sure hope that isn't a snowshoe 50K. I did a trail 50K in Sept and that was harder than I expected.

The Yankee Springs Winter Trail Run website says "snowshoes will be optional." Their FB page says, ...though they may be necessary. Either way it's going to be theatre of the absurd out there. Can't wait.
Someday, on the horizon of dreams, I'd like to finish the Susitna 100 on foot. Then maybe I'd have a real shot at winning the CWWC.
