Possible career change in the pipeline....
BY: mathsgeek on 2009-10-29 1:38 PM
I just thought I'd share the fact that I have an interview today that could take my career in an altogether different direction.
Currently, I'm Head of Math in a high school, but after 13 years at the chalk face, I'm becoming jaded and need to take a break from teaching, if only for now. So, quite by happy accident the other day, I got talking to the owner of an HR consultancy, who has asked me to interview with her for some staff positions in HR recruitment. I'm excited. It may come to nothing, but it may lead somewhere.
Just thought I'd share, since you guys are always supportive!
Wish me luck, if you'd be so kind.

Good luck! I'm also in a middle of a career change so I know how excited it is. I have a BS in math and right when I finished, I was done with it -

Good luck. Glad to know there are others out there that were insane enough to major in Math. -

Funny, I'm thinking about a career change too, except the opposite. I'm looking into becoming a high school math teacher.
Good luck

Is math still a "demanded" subject for teaching? Everyone says I can use it as a backup career and avoid the usual red tape to become a teacher.

That's what I keep being told, that both Math and Science teachers are in demand. UMass has program to fast track teaching degrees for ppl that have a BS and have a practical knowledge of the subject. Which is what I would be looking to do.

I've changed careers twice (started as a General Accounting Mgr, then was a professional horse trainer, then software developer) and let me say I LOVE CHANGING CAREERS! Actually, I just love change in general. I'm weird that way. Now, rather than changing careers, I just do lots of contracts, which is pretty much like changing jobs every 6-12 months. Love it! (Except that I'm really trying to stay where I am now... must not get wanderlust...)

Lots of demand for math and science, nothing for the humanities (I have an MA in Lit). I suspect it's not too different now.

Ok, reporting back on the first interview:
It went well, I am pleased with the conversations we had and the way in which I feel that I could relate to the woman who would be my boss. She was great, very straight up, to the point and honest with me, which speaks volumes. She has sent me away with a little presentation to prepare, basically asking about what vision I could bring, which is a fairly standard task to ask for methinks.
My only reservation is the time frame for completion of this process. I'm interviewing in a little over an hour for a job that would be great, for the additional opportunities it's going to afford me in terms of outside-of-work life, so I want to give it my all too. The issue is that this afternoon's interview is for another teaching position, and I'm not a million percent sure that I want to do that any more. Also, in schools over here, you often get offered the position at the end of the interview if you are who they are looking for. So, if they offer it to me, I'm going to need to make a decision relatively quickly. Hmmm.
Oh well, at the very least, it was an excellent experience sitting down with a national manager of an HR company, and it was nice to be told that I have some talent I didn't know about!
Thanks for your support everyone, I'll keep you posted!

Good luck on the second interview!lodewey - 2009-10-29 5:14 PM I've changed careers twice (started as a General Accounting Mgr, then was a professional horse trainer, then software developer) and let me say I LOVE CHANGING CAREERS! I agree! I love change. I think it helps you think outside the box, be creative and you always stay on top of things - adapting to the current climate. Hubby and I have taken some huge risks with our careers (ie quit and traveled for 3 months, started up our own businesses etc) and the results have always been incredible.
They say that it's not uncommon now for someone to have 5 career changes prior to retirement.
-environmental contractor
-management in financial industry
-technology consultant
-running my own business in sales
-management in medical field
That's five and I'm almost 40... I'm thinking I have a few more up my sleeve
