Mississauga commute route - Advice needed
BY: jaycee6 on 2012-04-18 6:26 PM
Hi all,
I will be working in Mississauga for 3 weeks and was looking into a bike commute since the drive home takes around the same time biking would (around 1.5 hrs). I'm not too familiar with the area and will drive around so I familiarize myself with the route but was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.I am near Courtney Park East and Kennedy and need to get back to the downtown core. I think I will be okay once I get down to Lakeshore and can go east there but was wondering the best route to take going South. I was thinking of going down Kennedy, West on Eglinton and South on Hurontario to Lakeshore. Is Hurontario a good idea to bike on or should I look for alternate routes?
Thanks in advance!!

I would avoid Hurontario. I can't suggest an exact alternate, but just find something that is less busy. That road would be a nightmare during rush hour.

i actually work at kennedy just south of britannia and grew up in mississauga - take kennedy south to burnhamthorpe and then go east to cawthra and down to lakeshore that way.

avoid hurontario as if your life depended on it, because it just might.

Thanks so much for the recommendation!!
Should I still expect relatively heavy traffic?

yes - it's mississauga, and if you're travelling between 6am and 9.30am or 3pm and 7pm, you're going to be surrounded by jerks in cages they can use as weapons.
traffic southbound on kennedy is often at a complete halt between britannia and matheson (so you can smugly sail past a lot of people), but opens up further down. beware of construction at the 403 bridge over kennedy/central pkwy - the right lane has been closed on and off for the last 6 months. you'll come into a school zone just south of the bridge, but it's only a "40kph when lights flashing", so depending on your time of travel you might not benefit from that traffic calming. i do see cyclists in this area quite often (some rather serious-looking roadies), so you may have company.
burnhamthorpe is very busy but you only have to travel on it for a couple of minutes. cawthra is typically quieter, but do mind the QEW interchange as people don't pay attention.
on the bright side, the way down to lakeshore is almost entirely downhill
cheers!

Thank you thank you thank you!! I think I'll give this a shot - beats sitting in a car for an hour and a half.
