Milton Triathlon : Official Thread

Is anyone else planning on going? I am going to do the Milton Triathlon before I do the 70.3 Mont-Tremblant later in June. -

I'll be there. It'll be my first race on a tri bike, first time doing Milton with a wetsuit. I'm expecting chaos in my T1, especially since the swim->bike run is so short I probably won't even be able to unzip it.
Interesting fact: After 2 years thinking "geez, the 6th line hill is enormous" I ran it through mapmyride, and apparently that hill would only be a cat 1 in the tour de france hill-ranking system. It makes me want to try a Cat 5 or HC hill.
Less than 5 months!

I'll be there doing the sprint. It will only be a "C" level race for me. I was only going to do the try-a-tri as a warm-up race, but let a co-worker talk me into doing the sprint. -

It is a very well run event.
I'll be there again.
Haven't decided on which distance yet, that will depend on how the (highly variable) winter training goes.

Those are called mountains!! Wish we had something in Ontario that would prepare us to ride those categories of climbs.

With a 90 degree left turn right after, so you don't even get to carry all your speed
And since everyone loves hills, the run course goes up the same escarpment as well

i've ridden that hill a few times. The first time i ever rode it i had to walk up it towards the end. That was when I first got my bike and had barely any endurance. The second time I rode it I made it all the way up but was dead tired. Going up that hill I was doing about 5 km/hr. but going down i reached 67 km/hr....awesome!!!!
We should setup some training rides when the weather gets better.

That hill is great for repeats - most I did at one time was 5. For me it's always easier to climb out of the saddle, so I try to see how long I can last seated. Usually only the first, and that's when I'm in shape. I went up there on the weekend with the wind in my face, which made things that extra bit more fun...

It's a short little hill... rather enjoy it myself.
I've done the race a couple times and really enjoyed the bike course both times. Love riding the hills in the Rattlesnake area, one of my favourite rides is the Halton Hilly Hundred... depending on what route you take, you get to climb the escarpment 5-7 times. GREAT training.
For those interested in climbing the hills in that area... here are the hills you should be trying, from hardest to easiest:
- Appleby Line... classic switch back. I measured on Mapmyride, close to 1 km climbing with an average grade of 10%. The switchbacks get close to 20%... they are nasty!
- Steeles... just a straight up gut wrenching climb... about a 1.5 km climb averaging 8%. Except for the stop sign they installed at the bottom in the last couple years it was a great one to descend.
- 14th Sideroad... starts out easy, but 3/4 of the way up, it pitches up VERY steeply, but it's a short stinger.
- Bell School line... fun to descend, just be careful of the driveways coming onto the road, people aren't expecting you to be coming down at 70kph.
- 6th Line... not that difficult, unless you're doing it in a tri/du... then it's a wall of people.
- Appleby Line on the North side... fun in either direction.
- Campbellville Road (I think?) coming out of Burlington or out of Lowville... great long steady climbs, just a lot of traffic.
Those are the ones that I can think of off the top of my head. It's been a while since I've ridden there... unfortunately... but, I enjoy every ride in that area.

It was about ten years ago the first time I went up the hill. I had to stop at the entrance of the golf course (right about where the steepest part of the hill ends) and take a 20 minute or so rest. I still had about 20km before I got home and wasn't sure if I could make it after going up the hill. Ten years later it's become part of my weekly "after work rides".
I recommend that anyone trying the event for the first time go out and ride the course beforehand. Or at the very least drive the course. I didn't do the race last year but I got on my bike and took a trip down and watched from the top of the hill. The most common thing I heard at the top was " it looked easier on Google".

Jon bovi, that is hilarious. You live in a gorgeous area, lots of lovely hills to train on.My first time up was during a liesure ride. It was the fifth time up the escarpment after 75 km, with 25 km to go. That was a tough day...but lots of fun. -

I am so looking forward to this race. It's the first one of the season for me and I can't wait to see how I do on the new bike setup. The hill on the bike seems to drag on. But the nasty hill at the beginning of the run is more what haunts me. Short but painful.

As this the closest Tri to me this season, I was planning on adding the bike route to my Saturday morning training ride. I was curious if anyone on here wanted to meet up and ride it with me. -

Going to be heading down on Saturday morning to test out the 6th line hill.
Anybody in that area know how busy Kelso Lake (and area) will be due to the dragon boats? Mostly concerned about finding a good spot to park.
Was also planning to try the hills on this route:

Any clues how traffic may be?

The hills on your posted route are generally tougher than the 6th line hill that is in the triathlon. Traffic into Kelso might be a headache but generally it should be relatively contained to Tremaine.
There are a lot of cyclists challenging themselves on those hills every weekend so you should have some company to suffer with.
Don't know of any available parking other than in the park however.

You're definitely planning on punishing yourself a little bit with that route. If you do it, my suggestion is Appleby first, Bell School second, Steeles third, and then 6th line. For some added fun you can ride the backside of Appleby afterwards.
