MUSKOKA 70.3 - Official Ontario Thread
BY: jspelay on 2010-04-05 8:22 AM
There seems to be lots of us planning on doing this race so I thought I would start an 'official' tread...
Its going to be my first HIM and I have the lofty goal of surviving!!!
Booked a room at Deerhurst already. They have rooms available and the rates were not that bad, a little over 200 a night for a suite with a kitchenette.

We seam to be on the same path of self punishment,,,, Muskoka and staying in one of their suites,,,, and hoping not to die,,, good luck with the training,,,, I am planning on getting out to the Bike Crse some time in July,,originally their web site had rooms advertised for 99$ for a night if you were training,,,, I havent checked in awhile but I think they are now up to 149$. Regardless going to to the crse just to see what we are in for,,,,happy, painful training. -

I'm also doing this race (I think! Still haven't signed up for it, yet!). I'm doing Lisa Bentley's training camp in June, so I thought I'd decide after that if I think it's doable without the dying part!
I'd love to stay at the resort, but I've already spent my allowance. Friends of ours have a cottage about 10 minutes from Deerhurst, so I'm staying there, and I'll just drive to the airstrip on race morning.
Good luck! It's my first half iron...what about you guys? -

I'm in - staying at Deerhurst as well - did the race in 2008 (rainy) and loved it. My wife quite liked that she could have a nice hot tub at the resort while I was out on the bike portion of the race.
A bit drier would be nice this year, but either way this is a great event.

I also want to do the bike course sometime this summer. I was planning on doing the OLY in Sarnia (July 24) and was thinking about going up there a week or 2 after. I will consider it one of my training rides, a long grueling HTFU training ride.

Your going to find quite the difference between our southern ontario roads and those hilly ones in Muskoka. None the less its a great race, and I recommend riding the course once before if you can swing it.
see you in Brights Grove.

I did the Race Last year and would Highly recommend staying at the resort if you can .. It just made it so easy for everyone .. The only problem was the three night minimum..
I also did the Bike course prior to the race I would also recommend doing that too.. You really have no idea how many hills there are untill you actually do it.. To top it off the bike course is actually 95K(just what you need)
It's a great event and I would be doing it again myself if I wasn't Doing IMcanada in August...
Enjoy the day !! -

Island Lake park just on the other side of the border is gorgeous and hilly - a great place to train!!!

I can't do the race this year and I'm feeling pangs of envy
I did race it last year and had a great time even though everything went wrong for me (destroyed wetsuit, bike mechanical problems...)
I want to take on that course again. I'll be back in 2011.
Good luck to you all in 2010.

I am doing half my riding in Bruce county (am working up here during the week), there are some really good hilly areas and I hope that prepares me for Muskoka. I did the Parry Sound tri last year, and I have a pretty good idea what its like to be not prepared. I am going to do a few rides in the Gravehurst area and want to ride the Huntsville course in August.
Any one interested in maybe doing a BT group ride in Huntsville this august?

I'd be up for a group ride in early August. Looking forward to driving the course after the Muskoka Long Course on July 24th.

Did the race last year without going up there before the race. I would highly recommend visiting the race site and course before the race. I'm not going to do it this year. Work constraints so I can't do enough training. It is a beautiful area and you will like the course that is assuming it's not raining like the first year. Last year the weather was perfect.

I am into week 2 and all is well! Already hitting the hills and wondering how I am going to make it through 94k of 'em!
Anyway, we booked a training weekend up there in July and are taking advantage of the 'Ironman training rate' at Deehurst. We heard that Hidden Valley had even cheaper rooms if you said you were coming up for training but our friends wanted to do Deerhurst which is fine with me. Just a PSA to remind you to use the deal if you're heading up!
Hope your training is going well!

My training was going great until 2 nights ago when I had an achillies tendonitis flare up while running. I am so depressed, made an appointment for ART on monday. Guess my plan is going to become bike specific for the next 4 to 6 weeks. ugh.

I have just registered for my first Muskoka and also my first HIM. I will be jumping from the sprint distance to the HIM. Feeling great with the 20 week training program that I'm following. Now looking for two rooms in Huntsville (wife and 4 kids). Any suggestion?
