Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 16/47
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30. Walk Bullit, drink coffee, toast.
Phone ringing at 5:30 - before looking I knew it was Matt or Drew.
Drew calling me telling me to get going...as he was already there!
Event warmup:

Short run with Drew, warm up stretches, a lap in the water.
Swim
  • 34m 55s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first open water triathlon and first olympic distance. Amazingly the swim was the best part of my day. Everything felt great considering how nervous I was. I was aiming for 30 minutes but knew that was a stretch. So am pretty satisfied with the time here.
What would you do differently?:

Swim around other people more efficiently
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Pretty good transition. Wet suit strippers helped make that happen.

What would you do differently?:

Learn practice the next step - shoes clipped on bike.
Bike
  • 1h 28m 17s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.89 mile/hr
Comments:

This is where the day went downhill. 1 mile onto my bike a stabbing pain in my stomach. The best thing I can compare it to would be an ice pick twisting my intestines. I am rambling through my mind what this could be...did I drink the lake, breath wrong on the swim, was I dehydrated, did I drink enough water thursday and friday, do I have the flu, where are the paramedics, can I please go home and lie down???
I did my best hanging on the bike...literally. People passing me I am still passing people but not feeling great.
Matt passed me and said hey "I know you!" I am sure I had the look of death at that point.

In order for me to be competitive I need a new tri bike that I can race for next year.
What would you do differently?:

*In talking to my friend who is a dietician the problem was most likely a dehydration thing. I always hydrate well 48-72 hours prior to the marathons and am sure I did not do that here.

*Continue to work 3 jobs so I can buy the new bike
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

Good transition here.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - this i have down.
Run
  • 56m 23s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

If riding 25 miles was not hard enought with stabbing stomach issues - running this 10K was a whole different kind of pain.
At this point I was finishing this thing regardless of whether I was going to live or not.
I considered ditching to the side and hiding in a cluster of trees.
I could hear Dick Dime yelling at me from Vail.
Mentally I was not doing well...as I had anticipations of running a 7:40 pace today.
The highlight of my run was seeing my friend Cassi. She is super supportive and an excellent triathlete. She could see the agony and defeat in my face.
I told her I felt like S%#$(%*@#($*%(#$* and she said "You are supposed to feel like *($*!@#(*#(!@!!"
She was being kind and told me I looked great and strong.
I finally kicked it in to the finish at a sub 7 pace for the last quarter mile. I have no idea where that came from except that I just wanted it over.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate properly 72 hours before.
If I do this race again next year I will do harder/hillier ride run bricks.
I made the mistake of staying inside on the treadmill the last couple of weeks. I need to train in the sweltering heat and on hills more.
Post race
Warm down:

walk around, hang with Matt, Drew, my friend Jackie.
drink coke, a coors light and a propel.
My stomach was not eating anything.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

ice pick in stomach

Event comments:

Great race, lots of volunteers.
I will do this again...I am not done with this course.
This was my first Olympic distance, third triathlon, first open water, worst 10K time and longest bike race.
Time to focus on marathon training assuming that I can still run.
