Pre-race routine:

Woke 3:30. Aquaphored everything extra well because it was going to be a wet race. Wore UA running pants, UA Compression mucle shirt, Disney Half tech race shirt, topped with ITF race shirt. Sweat band, and light UA running gloves. Ate peanut butter powerbar, drank powerade. Only had enough Hammer Race Day Boost for 3 doses, I took the day before. Drove over to EPCOT from Bonnet Creek at 4:00 with Steve, Ev, Ernie, and Kim. Left at 4, got there like 4:45 I think, traffic was pretty bad. Sat in warm car until saw people starting to move. Met up with Dale & Ted in reunion area. Was huge lines for people waiting for bag check. Even though I didn't have a bag to check I still had to wait in the line. People were checking for race bib or chip before they let you through the tent.
Event warmup:

Was walking the long walk to the corral (and that's when it first started to light drizzle) when I realized the first wave (mine) was starting in 10 minutes! I knew Disney races are always on time, so I jogged the last half mile to my corral, stopping at the edge of the woods to pee along the way. Got to 'A' corral, took off my old throw-away sweat pants, black trashbag, and old long sleeve tee-shirt, took my hammer gel/ 6 drops of creatine / powerade concotion, and did a couple minutes of stretching during the national anthem, then race started. Real glad I didn't have to wait in the corral in the freezing rain, but wish I didn't have to stand in line at bag check!

Comments:

Keeping cool? Ha! It was hard to keep warm! Most of the first 5 miles was into the wind, with the ice pelting your face. I had to run with my sunglasses on in the dark, and am VERY lucky I didn't hit a curb or pothole because I felt blind when I was running in an area without a light, and there were plenty of those areas. Wasn't as many spectators as 2 years ago (can't blame them), but there still was quite a few to cheer you on. Had powerade 3 times. Was on track to make my goal of a sub-1:30 til mile 10. That's when I started getting a real bad stomache cramp (probably from drinking the ice-cold powerade), then my calves started killing me the rest of the race when the cramp went away. That's the only things that slowed me down. I was on track to break 1:30 until mile 10. After I slowed down for a while, I knew I wouldn't break 1:30 so I didn't push as hard as I could've. I thought I missed a PR too, but forgot what my PR was until afterwards. It was 1:30:51 in Vegas, 2008. If I knew I was only 4 seconds off, I definitely could've dug deep and PR'd! Fingers were frozen most of race, even after mile 4 when I finally took my fingers out of the finger holes and kept them in my palm with my thumb. Otherwise, I was dressed perfectly.
What would you do differently?:

Run a little faster, ignoring the immense calf pains, to at least PR. Wear mittens in these conditions.
Post race
Warm down:

Could not stop shivering. Hands frozen, could barely function, when medical people kept asking if I was alright, mouth was frozen, could barely talk. Was real awesome, one guy stuck with me until he was positive I wasn't going to die! There was no line for bag check when I finished. Walked to car, warmed it up. Got dry clothes on. When hands finally started working, got my winter coat on, and attempted to go watch my friends finish, but was shivering too bad. Sat in hot car until everyone else finished (2 hours later, Ernie & Kim finally finished)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cramp from ice-cold Powerade (presumably), and painful calves. Could've been caused by cold, not sure. Could've been caused by my old 6.9 oz. race shoes. Think I am retiring them now. I really liked the Spira race shoes with springs in them that they had at the Expo. Not sure of the price. Couldn't massage my calves after race. Too sore.

Event comments:

Worst thing was bag check. Need big improvement when bad weather like this year. Also, a few hundred propane heaters placed strategically around the finish/staging area would be nice when it's below 40 degrees!

Course: Start outside EPCOT, run to MK, through the castle, back to inside EPCOT, slight hill after mile 12 inside EPCOT, then a double left-hand 90 deg turn (killer!), then back by Spaceship Earth again, finish outside EPCOT. At one point on the way back to EPCOT, there was a 170 degree right hand turn that led to an overpass. It really sucked, and wish I would've cut through the grass. It's painful that late in the race.
