Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:45. Morning routine, had a Mini Clif Bar & a Gatorade Pre. Had a shower woke the wife and drove the 45min to Camp Blanding National Guard training base on Kingsley Lake. Arriving at 6:15. We didn't see many cars going the same direction, until realizing we were almost the last to arrive. Wow!
Event warmup:

Got marked, chipped and transition set up. It was crowded on the bike racks, and assigned by number. I did get a short "warm-up" swim, although it was already very hot, the clear lake water was fabulous. I enjoyed the sunrise, the scenery and the singer of the National Anthem.

Comments:

My swim actually went pretty well. I started far to the right of the group, although I figured I had actually a more direct line the first turn buoy that most. The wave started and I was determined to just swim under control and try to learn and enjoy my first competitive swim. That's what I did. There was a little contact, got hit a few times, just laughed, swam off course quite a bit. The lake had developed a pretty fair chop and the wind was in our face, causing me to swallow more water than I intended. This made me thankful for some recent Ocean swims in choppy water. Drinking the fresh water was more pleasant than salt water, although I think I could feel the difference in the bouyancy! When I finally felt like I was getting my rythym and second wind, the pink swim caps from the ladies wave (3 mins behind) began overtaking me. Oh well, they were fast and courteous and helped me with sighting. I just watched where they were going. It was an exciting experience, hope to do it again soon. My time was slower than I expected, but I'm a newby swimmer...
What would you do differently?:

I performed at about my swim fitness level. Just got to learn to swim & build up my strength for it.
Transition 1
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

As mentioned before, the bike racks were crowded. I arrived to find someone had moved my bike over, and I would have to move it before I could get to my shoes and stuff. No biggie, but cost me time. Got my bike shoes on, a swig of gatorade, put on my helmet. I grabbed my bike & ran out of transition as quickly as I could, there was a lot of congestion.
What would you do differently?:

Slow down just a little going from the swim to transition to think again about the plan...
Bike

Comments:

I ran from transition, flying mount went very well. Quickly got my speed up and clipped in good. What a nice surprise to find some nice downhills soon after the first few miles. I really felt good, and was going pretty fast. Passed a ton of people, before seeing bikes coming back the other way and seeing that the riders were laboring. This reminded me that I was having a lot of fun going downhill with the wind at my back !! :)) I decided to save a little. Drank a little water, probably not enough. Overall had a good race, blitzing the downhills and corners when others were coasting and braking. Good Stuff.
What would you do differently?:

Need more bike fitness. I had a decent ride, but didn't leave much for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Decent transition, removed my helmet, got my bike shoes off, running shoes on(my new Yankz shoe laces are the bomb!!). Grabbed my number belt and sweat band and headed for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really
Run

Comments:

Got a slow start, trying to get my breathing and heart rate right. It was sunny and beginning to get really hot. I kept waiting for the "brick" to wear off...Unfortunately, the race was half over by the time I finally began to pick up my feet, and wished I had more miles left to try to make up for such a lousy start. Passed a few guys, but mostly just suffered :(
Just a slow, sweaty, run. Uhh... hated to finish that way...
What would you do differently?:

More brick runs. Because of my work schedule I usually run (in the morning darkness) and then Bike. I got to get some bike first runs done in the heat of the day. More run fitness, I have had an ankle injury this summer that caused mr to take off about 6 weeks of running.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, some fruit, then a dip back in beautiful Kingsley Lake. Chatted with a couple of my "Shark" buds, Arik & Brenda. Postrace results, awards and raffles were fun and well done.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swimming is still pretty much a joke, running getting better after injury, Bike I am having fun and getting faster (although I am quite sure I was the only competitor on a Schwinn Varsity today!).

Event comments:

'Hope to do this one many more times !! Highly recommend
