Pre-race routine:

Woke at 5:15 and got dressed and had an english muffin with peanut butter. Left about 6am to drive from Karen's to Long Branch. Thanks Karen!! Waited in line to check in and get marked and then set up my transistion area. Gary went to grab some breakfast. Was kind of chilly and I didn't have tights. Oh well.
Event warmup:

Jogged a bit and got into the freezing water once before the heat kicked off.
Swim
  • 24m 58s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 30s / 100 meters
Comments:

Well, my goggles fogged up very quickly and I couldn't keep them clear. The water was kind of choppy so every time I tried to sight the buoy there seemed to be a wave in the way. This was my first ocean race swim and it kind of sucked.
What would you do differently?:

Train more in the ocean. Which I could probably do only if I didn't have a job and family.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

My wetsuit got a little stuck on my wrist because I never let go of the zipper pull which got caught around my watch. I am a dummy!! The rest went really well. Suit came off quick and got my helmet and glasses on. Sat down quickly to dry off my feet and throw my socks and shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 40m 23s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.83 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was four laps out and back. It wasn't bad except for some crosswinds and the left turn before the turnaround was about 120 degrees. Kind of funky. Overall felt good on the bike. Ate a clif shot block and a clif shot on the bike. Would have loved to have a tri bike or aero bars because my shoulders were kind of dead after fighting the ocean.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe get a lighter bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

Threw off my helmet glasses and shoes and got my running shoes on very quick thanks to my yankz laces. Felt really quick in transistion today!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 27m 46s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, I think I started getting feeling in my dead toes about halfway through the run. My legs were a little dead when I started the run but warmed up pretty quick. Felt not as slow as I usually do.
What would you do differently?:

Keep doing what I am doing as far as working on my running. Maybe throw in some more bricks outside before my races which is sort of hard with the little ones.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit. Chatted with Gary and this girl Kristine who I met on race day. She lives in Arlington, VA and was super nice. We kept passing each other on the course and she told me that my transition times were really quick. Now if I could just step up the rest of the stuff. Hee hee.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Very cold body parts and lack of talent on the swim and run.

Event comments:

The location of this race is super. It is behind a hotel, so there are bathrooms and also a bathroom building right on the boardwalk. By the time you get out of the water, run through the sand and get to T1, your feet are pretty clean. Nice place, first year though so the post race activities was limited to the massage guy and a table with fruit and water. Turned out to be a beautiful day though and I had a lot of fun and met some nice people. I would like to do it again next year (especially since there were only 3 people in the 40-44 category and I would have gotten third place) :)

Haven't gotten the split times yet and I forgot to start my watch. Coming soon!!

Overall: 76/111
Performance: Below average
Suit: Quintana Roo Super Full
Course: Out and back from the beach. I think we all swam longer than a kilometer because the buoy kept floating out to sea after they anchored it down twice. After I went around the buoy a boat was bringing it back in. Why couldn't they have done that before I got all the way out there. My goggles kept fogging and I couldn't feel a couple of my toes by the time I finally got done.

Course: There was crosswinds on the out and back. Only had headwinds for one block. The only thing that should be changed on the course is the sharp left turn before the circle turnaround. The road was mostly smooth with some rough patches usually when one of the long course people were trying to pass me.
