Pre-race routine:

Got up with 3 hours until the race start. Let the dogs out, made myself a PB&J sandwich, Andrew came over then we loaded up the bikes and left.

Parked next to Chris(cheddar_son) and Anant(indiancrossover). Anant and I each did this race two years ago as our first triathlon. We were racked right next to each other and two weeks later found out we were both on BT.
Event warmup:

Did a quick 10 minutes on my bike. Near the end I went to shift from my small to large ring and dropped my chain. Got everything back on and suddenly it would shift quickly from one gear to another and back.

Went back to the Jeep and tried to adjust my derailler but didn't have any luck. Hurried to transition and found Jack to get some better tools. Spent the next 15 minutes making adjustments but nothing seemed to work. Then I made a twist in my barrel adjuster and turned the crank. PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT. My rear tire goes flat. This is not my weekend.

Changed the tire and went back to work on the derailler. Finally just had to give up and live with it. I just wanted this weekend to be over now. A flat tire yesterday and now this. If I could get through the bike then maybe I could finally relax.

Pre-race meeting had already started so I skipped my warm up run and swim.
Swim
  • 05m 5s
  • 274 meters
  • 01m 51s / 100 meters
Comments:

Got in the water and after 50 yards I had to pass two guys who were back stroking the swim! They obviously had no idea what they were doing when they wrote down their swim times.

Caught the guy ahead of me in the next 50 and had two guys running in the shallow end whom I could easily make my way around. I hate pool swims.
What would you do differently?:

The back strokers probably cost me 15 seconds and that's why today's swim was so much slower than yesterday's.
Transition 1
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

Got my goggles and cap off as I ran. Cliff was there to let me know that both of my tires had air for a change today. At least that made me smile. Glasses on, helmet on, grab the bike and run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Comments:

Got up to speed and climbed into my shoes. Looked down just to make sure that my tires really did have air. Okay, just don't get a flat and I might actually have a good race.

Headed up to the lake and I was slowly working my way through the pack. Winds were strong around the lake. You'd be fine one minute and then make a turn into what felt like a brick wall. But judging by the rate I was passing people, it was hurting them a lot more than me.

Saw the leaders coming back the other way and let Jacob know that he was sitting 5th. Came up nice hill and made the turn around. Andrew wasn't far behind me so I'd need a good run to stay ahead of him.

The winds on the ride back in weren't quite as bad. Nearing the end I got passed by the guy who started just ahead of me in the pool and I passed there. Seemed a little odd that was killing himself trying to get ahead of me.

Dismounted and came into transition right behind him.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Stayed in my race zone and felt great.
Transition 2
  • 00m 29s
Comments:

Shoes on, grabbed my race belt and visor so I could put them on while I ran.

3rd fastest overall T2!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 20m 52s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Immediatly passed the guy who caught me on the bike. He must have used everything on the bike because he didn't have anything on the run. Took the long downhill easy before getting back on the gas for the flats. First mile 6:10.

Made the first two out and backs and my HR was still in the low end of my race zone. Saw Jacob and Tyler headed back as I went up the incline to the far turn around. 2nd mile was a much more reasonable pace. Headed back in I felt like I was flying.

Came up the last hill and spotted a guy in the AG at the top. Looking at his bib number I was already a few minutes ahead of him, but I still wanted to physically beat him to the line. A little anti-climactic when he slowed and said, "It's all you." I was hoping for a sprint to the finish but whatever.

Crossed the line and did my best not to puke.
What would you do differently?:

Beat my stand-alone 5K PR by 6 seconds.
Post race
Warm down:

Leaned against a tree and tried to catch my breath. Found out that Jacob, Tyler and I were all within 30 seconds of each other. Andrew came in a minute or two later with the fastest run of the day. Headed to the Jeep to weigh myself and get my Endurox.

Packed my stuff up and then hung out waiting for the awards. Since the two days were combined for the awards Jacob, Tyler and I took 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th in our AG. Even with my flat tire the day before the next guy was 2 minutes behind me. Taking 5 minutes off my time for the flat, all 5 of our finish times would have been with 45 seconds of each other.

Total age group domination.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Beat my course best time by 3 minutes. Only problem was the guys in the pool who slowed me down. Might have gotten 2nd and 5th without them.

Event comments:

Great race, but VERY slow to get the awards done since they had to combine the two days results.
