Pre-race routine:

Saturday evening we had our first Team T3 Pre-Race Feast. Spaghetti, garlic bread, pasta salad, carbo loading at it's finest. We had it at the park so the kids could play. It was a very good time.

Early departure to get there for my daughter's race. Helped Becca set up and race. Also, set up some of mine and Monica's stuff for our race later. Becca did well.
Tried to get some food in, afternoon starts are always hard to decide what to eat and when. Bowl of cereal before we left about 5am. Cliff bar about 8am. Banana and granola bar about 10:30am. 1 Gel about 12:20pm.
Got Monica and I all set up (Monica's first tri).
Event warmup:

A few warmup laps in the pool about 1 hour before my start time. Stood in line and waited my turn to jump in pool.
Swim

  • 440 yards

Comments:

Caught the guy in front of me fairly quickly. Tapped on his feet a few times and then made my pass. Pushed off the next wall and feel him on my feet. No problem, he wants to draft, but he continues to slap my feet, so I move over to maybe see if he wants by. He doesn't pass so at the next wall I swim over a little to push off the wall away from him. He then pushes off the wall and tries to cut me off. Not real sure what he was thinking this whole time, but he then proceeded to smack my ankles and calves for the remainder of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Get away from the guy. Should have went hard for a quick burst to get away. I entered a 7:40 swim time and swam 7:45, so this was pretty much on schedule.
Transition 1
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

Have to run out on pool deck, turn left, go down the stairs, then across transition. I racked right by the bike out which is on the opposite end as run out. Good T1 for me. I've been putting my bike shoes on in T1 and just running out in them. Seems to be more comfy for me this way, then trying the flying mount on my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure I could have done much better.

Comments:

WINDY!!! Scary wind today. Blowing 20-30 with gusts to 40. Really thought my bike was going to come out from beneath me a few times. Crosswind on way out and in. About 1 mile stretch (done twice) into wind and 1 mile (done once) with the wind. I left my disc cover on since it is a pain to take off. I've ridden in some wind, but not like this. I passed a ton of people on the bike. Good ride for me. There were quite a few more bikes there than 8 that had wheelsets that cost way more than my complete setup. Took 1 gel at mile 11.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe ease off a little to save for run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

No hold ups here. Racked bike, slid on shoes, grabbed hat, Garmin, and race belt and took off. Most of the time was running accross transition. Heard cheers from the cheering section. I heard my daughters' hollering too.
What would you do differently?:

Acknowledge my kids for their cheering efforts.
Run
  • 25m 45s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt decent running off the bike, but soon slowed. I'm not happy with my run time this week or last week. I do see that most people's run times suffered a little this week, including the top 2 finishers of last weeks race. Their run times were slower this week than last on what should have been a faster run course. I think the wind on the bike took alot of everyone and there was some wind on the run as well.
What would you do differently?:

More early season bricks in training, but may have to move down South to get those in.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and cheered for rest of our team. Got to see Pat finish. Watched Nick, Bob, and Monica come in from the bike. I was soooo proud of Monica. After a brutal windy ride, she never once mentioned not going out for the run.

Note to self, SUNTAN LOTION!!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wind, but it was windy for everyone.

Event comments:

Once again, this is a great race.
