Pre-race routine:

Up at 5 and snoozed until 5:10am. Had coffee and an english muffin at the house. Left by 5:55 am and since it was only 1.5 miles to the race site, we were there quickly. Found a great parking spot and walked to the transition area with Brad and Karen. Interesting race. There were no bike numbers or helmet numbers. In the TA, there were no numbered racks so you could rack wherever you want. Worked out fine, but it would be a shame if someone's bike was stolen. Anyway, we found some empty racks near the bike out...funny that we racked on different racks from eachother. Set up the transition area and then wandered around, chatting with Karen. We got body marked in the pavillion and hit the rest rooms. At nearly 7am (the expected race start time), they herded everyone into the TA for the pre-race meeting. After the meeting, we walked down to the beach and then walked north to the swim start. At this point, it was nearly 7:15am and I was actually hungry again. They were giving out orange caps for those participants who wanted the extra visability. I took one so Karen could find me easier. Brad was in the first wave and I was 6 minutes later in the 3rd wave.
Event warmup:

No real warm up besides standing on the beach waiting for the start.

Comments:

The website pre-race said they'd determine the swim direction based on the current. They selected poorly as we were swimming into the current!
I started dolfining and saw I was out in front of the wave with one woman in front of me. The dolfining worked well to get me out to the point where I could swim. The waves were fairly large and made it tough to get out to the first bouy. I actually started to get sea sick and dry heaved once or twice. Turned right at the first bouy to swim parallel to shore and could tell there was a current based on my effort. Finally made it to the last bouy to make the turn into the beach. Swam until I could stand up and then I jogged to the beach. I decided to take my wetsuit off at the waters edge. I sat down and slid it off which only cost be about 10 seconds or so. I had no issues getting the wetsuit off at all. The swim time also includes about 1/8 of a mile run up the beach in the sand, across the boardwalk and the street into the TA.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing in my control. I was able to get a solid start, but the current made it challenging to have a fast swim. My effort level was higher than ususal which caused me to walk for a few seconds on the way to the TA so I could catch my breath and get my HR under control.
Transition 1

Comments:

Flawless T1 for me. I went sockless and had a waterbottle to wash the sand off my feet. Shoes, helmet and sunglasses on and I was off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Perfect T1 for me.
17th OA for T1 and 1st in AG.

Comments:

Before the race, I wanted to push the bike to see what I could do. Surprisingly, the course wasn't too crowded for being 3 laps. The course was fast and uneventful. It was nice to have the crowds near the turn around. And it was awesome to have Karen there yelling for us at the end of each lap. I took a GU at the end of the 2nd lap. Legs felt good and I am really happy with how I felt on the bike. Saw some interesting things on the course...2 guys riding in beach swim trunks and then a guy riding with no hands. He was swirving on the road and as I passed him, I told him it probably wasn't a good idea. He felt otherwise. Overall, a fun bike course.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at all.
2nd in AG.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Helmet and glasses came off with no issues. I tried to just slip my bike shoes off, but they were velcroed on tight enough for me to have to undo the velcro. I wore the Zoot shoes and went sockless. On with the visor and race belt, grabbed my waterbottle and I was off.
What would you do differently?:

Undo velcro from the start. Also, I wasn't really sure where the run out was and could have probably shaved 2-4 seconds. Overall, minor details.

3rd in AG in T2.

Comments:

I tried to get my breathing under control from the start. I can usually do that by getting into a rhythm with my cadence. I felt like I was running as fast as I could and was hoping I could hold the pace for the rest of the run. Before the end of the lake a woman in my AG passed me. I tried to hang with her, but she was too fast and I settled back into my pace. Hit the pavement on Ocean and I was much happier running on the road. Heard Karen and Brad yelling for me as I passed the finish line. A short while later, another woman in my AG passed me. I knew one passed me on the bike and I was just hoping she was in the top 3. Before the turn around, I could feel two hot spots on my arches. It just progressively got worse as the run went on. I kept telling myself that it wouldn't be any better if I slowed down so I kept at my pace. I hit the turn around and was so ready to be done running. I started to dump some water over my head to try to keep cool. Since there were no mile markers, I wasn't sure how fast I was running or how far we were from the finish. I started looking at the numbered street signs since I knew the finish line was ~ 5th Ave. Got close to the finish and heard Brad and Karen yelling. Gave it a final kick to finish strong.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. A good run for me. I could have worn socks, but it wasn't a huge issue.
Post race
Warm down:

Found Karen and Brad and got our stuff cleaned up from the TA. We put the bikes in the car and hung around waiting for the awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing necessarily in my control. The current sucked, but everyone had to deal with it. Overall, a solid race for me.

Event comments:

First year for this race. It was great to be so close to Karen and Mike's.
Pros: location, fun bike course, spectator friendly, nice pint glasses for AG awards

Cons: no bike numbers = no TA security, unorganized in the AM, late start, swim into the current, no mile markers on the run, slow packet pickup with limited hours

I'd do this race again, despite the cons. It was great to be so close and it's always fun to race with Brad.
