Swim
Comments: It was so nice to actually be able to sight on the buoy! What can you say about a 4 minute swim??? What would you do differently?: I've only been in the pool once or twice since my HIM. My shoulders are feeling it tonight -- especially the healed collarbone area. If I had really been serious about this race, I should have been swimming a bit! Transition 1
Comments: Funny timing, very different from previous years. They've just started incorporating T1 and T2 timing into these results (new timing process), and the swim finish line was a very far distance from the beach. Last year my swim time was 4:15, this year it was 4:43. I don't think I've regressed -- it's more about where they timed it. Bike
Comments: The bike was amazing! I haven't been biking much either (actually, I've been a real slacker in all elements of training!), but I guess my base was substantial enough to pull me through. I felt good, even though it was HOT! HOT! HOT! I usually don't see perspiration (SWEAT!!) on my arms and legs while I'm racing, but today was just crazy HOT! I kept telling myself not too push too hard because I wanted to have something left for the run, but I was having too much fun. Plus, we're talking a mini-sprint here -- I should have enough stamina to make it through. But did I mention that it was HOT??? What would you do differently?: Nothing really -- maybe push a little harder? Or more training? Transition 2
Comments: A little difficulty getting my racing flats on with the yankz, but the biggest thing was that I couldn't get rid of the salt water taste in my mouth! Oops -- that means I forgot to hydrate after the swim and during the bike. I've got a problem coming up, because I have huge difficulties drinking while I'm running. Run
Comments: I told myself that walking was not OK today. But I quickly broke that promise to myself (note to self -- pull out "Mind Gym" again). Did I mention how HOT it was? I don't think I've learned how to slow down my pace. During a race I either have race pace or nothing -- gotta work on that! What would you do differently?: Hmm... I think it's a mental thing. I finished without a problem, so I conned myself into believing that I was on the edge during the run. I'm thinking it's time to get more disciplined with running! Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: I probably forgot to mention it, but it was HOT! HOT! HOT! And then there was that slide in motivation after my HIM... Event comments: This was my very first tri two years ago. I have friends who do this race every year, and it's very special. The support by the community is wonderful, the awards are amazing, the food and after-party is spectacular, and it's a great race for an introduction to the fabulous sport!!! First, I have to confess that this was not my first triathlon. So why was I racing this "MY FIRST TRI"? Because my company is a major sponsor of this race, that's why. And I raced in the alumni division, so it's all legitimate. But anyway, my pre-race routine was normal -- start waking up hours before I needed to get out of bed! When I finally did get up, I had some coffee and a Clif bar, then headed to the race course (a short drive from my house).
Too hot to warm up -- not sure what the temperature was at the start, but at 6:00 when I got out of my car it was already 80. I saw a few crazies actually running as a warm up, but I felt that would be like practicing bleeding. A few stretches and a few swim strokes was my warm up.
