Pre-race routine:

Got up, made breakfast... took a shower to wake up and headed out.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 25m
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first true open ocean swim. It was an adventure! Was kind of comical because you could tell who was worried and who wasn't. Loved having to crash through the waves

My internal GPS was working spot on as I didn't really site and managed to swim overtop of two intermediate buoys and their yellow ropes.
What would you do differently?:

Wear a wetsuit!!!!!! Might have a chance for overall swim victory with one.
Transition 1
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Went down the wrong aisle even though I walked the swim exit pre-race. They changed it after we had left the transition area because the wetsuit strippers were now in place. That threw me off.

It was a long race so I didn't hurry too much.
Bike
  • 2h 45m 34s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.29 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed the first half of the bike way too hard. Was averaging over 22 mph. Maybe it was a tailwind... but given my heart rate was between 160-170, I needed to slow up a tad.

Funny thing happened in the hilly part of the course. A semi was blocking the entire road attempting to back into a driveway. Cost probably a minute.

I paid for it on the way back. I limped home going 16-17 mph to attempt to save what was left of my legs for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to pace better.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

T2 went good. Didn't try to make it quick, just get everything I needed, eat a banana and go.
Run
  • 2h 01m 33s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Was great for my first half marathon. Was striving for 2 hours. Pacing was good. Pushed it a little too hard in miles 7-10 as I was feeling good, but fell apart in the last mile.
What would you do differently?:

Train more
Post race
