Pre-race routine:

Road with Dutch and her bf. Had oatmeal, 1 egg, banana for breakfast. Hung out with a pitbull in the back seat of the car. Got to the site and got bit by a ton of ants.
Event warmup:

Ran .5 miles to warm up and stretch. Hamstring felt tight but loosened up after the warmup.

Comments:

Well, this was just an interesting run. I got out in front early and asked myself numerous times "what the hell am I doing in front." Went out about 6:10 the first garmin mile and felt good. Decided to keep with it and see how others reacted. Held the lead until about 200 yards left and 2 guys decided to kick for the end of the run. Not sure if that's a strategy but I felt good and ready to have a good transition
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It felt good but set a pr for "5k"

Transition 1
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Decided not to clip in the shoes before hand. Good decision. Ran through the mud and clipped in fine.
What would you do differently?:

Natta
Bike
  • 39m 28s
  • 14.8 miles
  • 22.50 mile/hr
Comments:

Make sure bike is tuned properly before hand. It definitely put me more anaerobic than I would have liked but I was able to get through. Probably could have taken another 30 seconds or so off by having decent shifting.
Transition 2
  • 00m 35s
Comments:

Interesting dynamics to a du transition. As I started to pull my feet out of the shoes before the transition, I realized I had socks on and the mud would not mix well with the socks and the running shoes. Opted to do the cyclist heel sprint and it worked out really well.

What would you do differently?:

natta.

Comments:

Wow. Went into no man's land for a little bit with no idea of how far the guys were in front of me. Hit the turn around and then saw a couple of the guys about 2-3 minutes behind. Cranked it up a notch and did the last mile in 6:15. Finished with a smile on my face.
What would you do differently?:

Could have pushed harder. There's no smiling in tri(du)athlon
Post race
Warm down:

walked around tried to find other du guys and congratulate them. Waited for dd to come through

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not knowing what the body could do. More experience with the du's

Event comments:

Not enough water after the race but other than that, swell race with a challenging bike course.

Kept HR above 170. Holla.
Wind: None
Course: So this has pretty solid hills. But what makes it worse is when you are stuck in your 3rd smallest cog on the big ring and can't shift down for the incline. Luckily none of the grades were too big but it could have been a disaster on a real steep climb or a prolonged one. Great course otherwise
