Sunny
Total Time = 1h 32m 38s
Overall Rank = 68/98
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 18/23
Pre-race routine:

Took PM better blockers later at 9pm and skipped them race morning to see if that would reduce HR suppression but found no difference in race HR avg or O2 management. Will stop monkeying w/ that. Arrived at 8:45 and set up- ate tuna sandwich banana, cliff bar at 2-2 1/2 hrs before, 1/3 gu just before race. Pure gatorade in aero bottle- didn't have time to dilute (way too sweet)
Event warmup:

10 minute bike
Swim
  • 19m 38s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

started to far at the back and draft candidates were too slow- quickly tired and side stroked about 1/3 of the time. Glasses fogged and sighting was worse than usual. Course was probably about 850m this year. Must be making up for last years 550M course!
Need more time in the water for sure. Probably only swam a dozen times this year.
What would you do differently?:

start closer to the front as my free is still quick (as long as it lasts!).
prep goggles better, be earlier to the beach!
Transition 1
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

Struggled with one heel- (no lube on ankles due to time rush) and had a really hard time putting the left foot in the shoe on the bike ride- got up to speed well, but lost time putting that foot in. One strap wasn't loosened enough. Rookie transistion!
What would you do differently?:

Arrive earlier and be better prepared, lubed, and shoes set.
Bike
  • 39m 32s
  • 20 kms
  • 30.35 km/hr
Comments:

Good bike all around except for the problem getting my foot in the left shoe at the start. Also, need to try conserving energy on the last 2 ks to get breathing easier before the run.
What would you do differently?:

try conserving energy on the last 2 ks to get breathing easier before the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Run
  • 30m 9s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 02s  min/km
Comments:

breathing was really laboured, but I did the best I could.
What would you do differently?:

Quit beta blockers!

Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

BB's, heart failure. I really should stop complaining.

Event comments:

Always a good race, though they should have a dentist on hand to replace lost fillings after the bike.
