Swim
Comments: OWS has been very inconsistent for me. I started to the back of the wave and had a bad first 200 yards-no rhythm, drinking alot of water and high heart rate. Settled down and had a solid swim after that. 30-40 strokes then a couple of breast strokes to sight. Got off course a bit so need to work on that. Did not really feel the current but the long stretch is "upstream". What would you do differently?: Continue to work on OWS. After first few minutes I was very comfortable and pushing at a solid pace-pleased with that part. Could have been sub 30 with better start. Transition 1
Comments: Pretty long run uphill to big transition area. Probably could have saved a few seconds here but otherwise fine. Bike
Comments: Goal was to go out comfortably and push it some over the last half of the race. Did not want to over do it given the heat. Felt pretty comfortable throughout. Had to get in the granny gears for the longer hills as everyone was slowly spinning up. Was looking to average around 200-205 watts given the heat and I was in that range. Overall pretty satisfied as this was my best placing in the AG for the 3 events. What would you do differently?: Nothing-stuck with my plan pretty well. Having some hills to train on locally would help. Transition 2
Comments: Lost a few seconds here when I had to go back for Garmin watch. Otherwise OK Run
Comments: Felt pretty good off the bike. Right calf held up fine. The two main hills early in the race really drained me. Fought a couple of cramps but the heat was the main factor on the course. I'm surprised my time is as "good" as it was since I walked 2-3 times and walked most aid stations. I tried to push the last mile but was only able to speed up a little over the last 3-400 yards. Great to see the finish line. Nothing left at the end-I was spent. Early on the run I felt I could go sub 50 but just couldn't do it. What would you do differently?: Not sure of anything-maybe turn on the air conditioning out there?? I train in the heat consistently but a combination of the heat and early hills made it a tough run for me. Post race
Warm down: Got finishers gift. Found some shade by the river and sat down with some cold water. Walked around a bit, visited with a few folks, checked results. Packed up and made the walk uphill to the car. What limited your ability to perform faster: Sketchy right calf has probably kept my run from being where I would like it to be. If I am going to try to really compete I need to get more consistent with my OWS. Event comments: Well run and organized. Certainly a great "big race" experience for someone like me with limited exposure to these types of races. Run course was pretty bleak at times-no one spectating/cheering except in the area near the start/finish. Not the fault of USAT-its just nice to have some encouragement during the run-anything to distract from the pain. Fun to see so many top athletes compete. Really impressed with the fitness level of the "older" age 60 and up racers-inspiring. Last updated: 2010-08-27 12:00 AM

Up early at the hotel. Wheat bagel and Ensure. Talked with a few racers in the lobby. Headed to the site. Walked the half mile or so from parking deck to transition. Met several people that I would see throughout the day.
Transition closed at 7:00am and my wave did not go off until around 8:15am. Drank some Gatorade, ate a few peanut butter crackers. Did some strides and stretching. Was able to get in the water about 3-4 minutes before start and swim around a bit.
