Sunny
Total Time = 5h 23m 36s
Overall Rank = 116/537
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 13/47
Pre-race routine:

Jogged a little. Nothing major. Was told I had a broken back a month and a half prior to the race. No exercise from then until a week prior to the race.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 33m 28s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim, although had to fight the current on the way out and on the way back. Fought off someone trying to draft off of me. He was pulled away from the course and took a longer to finish. It turned into a strategic race with the current.
What would you do differently?:

Take my time in the swim to set up the remainder of the race.
Transition 1
  • 03m 6s
Comments:

Hard to get on bike and put shoes on at speed due to the nature of the course initially. Lots of turns and potholes.
What would you do differently?:

Better job of removing wetsuit.
Bike
  • 2h 38m 48s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.16 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was great at the beginning. Was 5th overall at one point, until my legs gave out. Fast course, wind kicked up in the end or my legs died or a combo of both.
What would you do differently?:

Not go so hard on the bike course, knowing I had not worked out in a month and a half. Should have saved some for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Need to work on this at this distance. Legs were smoked and took longer to get shoes on than I liked.
What would you do differently?:

Go smoother.
Run
  • 2h 06m 43s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

By this point in the race I was smoked from lack of training. Quads began cramping up, forcing me to walk a significant amount. First three miles were at 8:00-8:25, from there it was a disaster and suffer fest.
What would you do differently?:

Train more. Not eat as much and practice nutrition in training better.
Post race
Warm down:

None

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not training the last month and a half prior to the race due to a back injury. Was happy to just participate.

Event comments:

Good race, although I would offer free massages to the athletes. It was a misleading to go have a massage, wait in line for close to 45 minutes only to find out the massages were at a price. At the Augusta Ironman there were plenty of staff to provide free massages. Post race food could have been better as well, not much in the way for vegetarians.
