Pre-race routine:

Woke up, ate, headed to race.
Event warmup:

Stretched a bit then walked the quarter mile to the start line. Lined up and had a laugh when some guys were talking to each other about a girl close by calling her "stocky" (she wasn't) a little too loud so she heard them. She was a little offended I think (she should have been) but the reaction on both sides was great.

Comments:

Not every day can be your best and this was one of those days. When the run started I was going at a good pace, but just didn't feel like I had "it". Tried to push on though. At the first mile I was at 6:30, which was 5 second off where I needed to be. Then I got behind some people that I could not pass due to the size of the trail, and the path was a bit slick in spots so I needed to watch my footing. Got to the 2 mile point at 13:15 so I was falling off pace doing that mile in 6:45. Oh well, at least I was passing people and I didn't think that there were that many people in front of me so I should be able to do good even if my time was not where I wanted it. Really started pushing it with about 0.2 miles to go and caught a couple people down the stretch so I was able to finish strong.
What would you do differently?:

I know the course was hard to pass and the footing wasn't the best, but I'm not going to say that was what made me run like I did. Even under perfect conditions, I don't know if I could have done what I wanted to. The goal is to break 20:00 in a 5k and I would have loved to do it, but I don't think the legs had it today. Was just under 2 seconds off it last time and 43 seconds off this time. It will come eventually.

I have been working out quite hard lately and I did the biking time trial last night so that took something out of me so that more than the conditions contributed to the performance today.

I'll have to go for the 20:00 in February.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and then went to cheer on my wife. Walked around the expo and spent some more money on a wetsuit and some artwork for the basement (cool Ironman print and some Packer pictures).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

See above about what I would do differently.

Event comments:

Did not like the course at all. The path was way too narrow. I was toward the front but when I turned around and saw the the bulk of the people going the other way it was just packed in tight and was even tight going one wide in my direction there were so many people together going the other way.
