Overall Rank = 172/997
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 17/98
Pre-race routine:

Woke up 45 mins before leaving. Shower. Breakfast (Multigrain bagel w/ peanut butter; yogurt; tea). Drive to event. Set up transition area. Carb drink 45 mins before race. Noted transition entrances / exits. Mental walkthroughs of transitions. Attended pre-race meeting. Walked around to stay relaxed.
Event warmup:

Light stretching 30 mins to race.
Swim
  • 19m 5s
  • 875 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a strong swim. Started mid way back on the outside. Had to navigate through some people to get to clear water. Felt pretty good initially. But tired sooner than expected and had to mix in some breaststroke. Need better endurance.
What would you do differently?:

Spend more time in the pool building up endurance. Learn to draft. Maybe consider a wetsuit?
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

T1 was pretty smooth. Bike at opposite end of transition. Long run. Sat to put on socks and running shoes (elastic laces a must!). Sunglasses, Helmet, Go!
What would you do differently?:

Get clip in bike shoes and bike w/o socks.
Bike
  • 50m 6s
  • 15.72 miles
  • 18.83 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt comfortable on bike, but need more practice to get gearing right. Felt I was inefficient on the hills. Rough road in one spot caused me to lose water bottle on lap 2 a few miles from T2.
What would you do differently?:

Consider buying clip in bike shoes to be more efficient when riding. Need a better race strategy. I found myself pacing more off of other riders than from listening to my body. I need more experience to know when to push hard. Better gearing approach to climb hills. Also need two water bottle cages - one w/ sports drink, one w/ water.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Bike in running shoes, so did not need to change footwear. Helmet off. Running hat and race belt on.
What would you do differently?:

Have extra drink in T2 (since water bottle lost on bike).
Run
  • 23m 47s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

Took water at beginning of run (lesson learned from first race 2 weeks ago!). Kept nice steady pace throughout. Additional water at aid station (mile 1+ and 2+).
What would you do differently?:

Very happy with the run. Split is my fastest 5k time by 1 minute.
Post race
Warm down:

Bottle of water; walked around for 5 - 10 minutes watching others finish. Some light stretching. Got a massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall, I was extremely happy with the result.

Must improve my swim endurance and bike race strategy / gearing experience.

Event comments:

Was a great race. Good music / food / activities. Very organized. Routes clearly marked. Will definitely be back!
