Swim
Comments: Luckily I was the last wave. I stayed with the pack until my goggles fogged and I had to roll on my back to correct the problem. After that it was not as easy to get back in position. Sighting seemed to slow me down. What would you do differently?: Not much. Continued training will make all the difference. Transition 1
Comments: Wetsuit struggle was on my arms but after that no real issue with it. Quickly put on my helmet and shoes. I have clips on my pedals so running shoes went on and I grabbed my bike...The whole rack came down. A volunteer came running to help me free myself and off I went. What would you do differently?: Run not walk with my bike Bike
Comments: Rough...I knew going in that this was going to be tough from the trial I did the week before. Figured best course of action was to just get through it. Plan was to take on a get every 15 to 20 minutes. I looked at the bike computer and realized I didn't have and fuel or hydration and it was already 20 minutes in. Before I had a chance to grab the bottle out of my pocket it bounce/ vibrated out. I choose not to stop pedaling. Figured I would take in my Gatorade in place of it. My bike is to big and the time in the saddle today was starting to fatigue my back. The first lap went a little better time wise that I anticipated so it was motivation to push on. I wasn't alone out there but after the first lap I realized that the people passing me were actually on the second lap. I confidence didn't waver though, Just thought I really need to train differently. On the second lap I saw my fuel bottle... Still didn't stop. What would you do differently?: DRINK MORE! Become more familiar with the course well in advance if at all possible. Train for what I will be riding. Stop and grab my bottle if it drops! Transition 2
Comments: Easy transition since I didn't have to change shoes. Some confusion ans to where my spot was. Had to grab a back up gel I had in my bag. What would you do differently?: Rack faster.... Run
Comments: There were no makers telling you where to go for the run... At no time did anyone even discussing this with the athletes but there were people directing you. After I crossed the mats I started my swatch (so I thought). We dropped straight off road and onto a trail.. I didn't mind at first until the path became very unsteady and we had to cross a piece of wood to cross a little stream. I was good but there was water in my ear that was really starting to become a problem. Everything was echoing in my head. I kept trying to shaking it out or pop my ear but nothing was helping. I don't know if it was the race or the stress or no fuel but I felt like I was fading fast. I felt a slight pain in my lower right abdomen. When we came out of the woods it was straight up a hill. I started thinking I was so unprepared for this. On the hill I had to slow to a walk.. I never had such a sharp pain before and it was getting worse. I would pick up running again but between my earache and the pain I didn't last long each time I tried. I didn't want to give up.. I grabbed a little water from the water stations but it was just enough to wet my mouth. There were know mile markers!!!!! Where was I???? I just had to keep moving forward. One last off road stretch was straight up another slight hill. I ran through the pain and it eventually subsided, at least to the point of being able to run. I approached the finish line and my son was cheering me on...What a great feeling. What would you do differently?: Keep running Post race
Warm down: Walked... What limited your ability to perform faster: Not training on much needed hills hurt. Need more interval work. The lack of nutrition killed me. My bike isn't fitted for me and is heavy, on the hills it made a huge difference, just like not have clipless pedals Event comments: A very small race given the propaganda of it being 29 years...... Not much organization and it seemed like a club based race. Very few individuals not part of groups. I am ready to recover and find another race... Training will be different and I'll be ready! Woke up at 4:45 quick shower that dressed. Woke the kids up and packed them lunches and anything additional they may want. Scott drove us about 45 minutes to the event site. Confusion set in almost immediately. Everything seemed so chaotic. Numbers were just handed out and assigned when you arrived. Had to ask 3 or 4 people about body marking and bike tags...Nobody had an answer.
Headed down to the water and swam a bit. wanted a quiet moment to collect myself and make sure I wasn't going to have and goggle issues... It was alot warmer in the water!
