Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:30 am to get a good spot in transition. And I got an awesome spot, in the middle, easy access to all the ins and outs from transition.
Event warmup:

Grabbed a cup of water and a Gu and left it on the side of the beach as I went for a short swim. Came out of the water to discover that someone swiped my Gu and crushed my water cup. That put me in a really grumpy mood.
Swim
  • 15m 23s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in wave 7 out of 13, about 100 in my wave. I started out in front on the right which worked out great for me. The lake was so much clearer than what I'm used to swimming in, which was a treat. I set my tempo trainer for 1:15. I was able to keep with that rate even though I felt I could go faster. I knew there were people passing me, but I zoned in to what I was doing and kept at my own speed. Sighting went well and came in handy once I rounded the first buoy and started catching up with earlier waves, like the woman swimming with 3 noodles. Though this wasn't any faster than my other swims, this is the first swim in a triathlon where I felt good the whole time and felt I could have even gone a little faster.
What would you do differently?:

Set my tempo trainer at a faster rate, work toward 1:10 in training.
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Knowing that the path from the beach to transition gets gravely, I set out a pair of flip flops close to the beach. Last year I had slip on sneakers. But the flip flops were a quicker choice and I was able to slip them on and run to my bike. I kept yelling to myself "Get out of here!" as I made my way through T1. Happy with my time.
What would you do differently?:

Bike

Comments:

There were some tricky issues on the course that slowed me down. Traffic in the first mile where I was stuck behind one-lane of cyclists. Then up the big hill there was a car in our lane going at the speed of the other cyclists who wouldn't pass them. Left very little room to move around them unless I wanted to cross the center line which ultimately I had to do. Then there were many cyclists that were riding just to the right of the center line who had no clue what it meant when I yelled on your left and refused to move over. I hate passing between cyclists. I felt stronger on the second half of the course than I did last year and didn't lose steam. Wish I could have gone a little faster, but nobody passed me on the bike and I was 19/1002 on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Hope for a earlier wave so I wouldn't get caught behind so many cyclists???
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Again, I really focused on getting out of T2 as fast as I could. Skipped glasses and hat this time.
What would you do differently?:

Next year try to work on transitions with my shoes on the bike.
Run
  • 24m 47s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

I did just about the same on the run as I did last year at Danksin. And this was a warmer race with a longer swim. So I'm finding a little more of my speed. My hip didn't bother me at all on the run. (Though it was sore for the next few days after.) To keep cool I dumped water over my head at the water stop. Felt like I could have pushed it a little harder, but still being a little cautious.
What would you do differently?:

Get some new racers. Mine are getting pretty trashed now.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around in the rain.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Slower people on the bike course.

Event comments:

I'm not sure if I'm going to do this race again anytime soon. It definitely was frustrating on the bike course. And not having more faster racers kept me from pushing myself more. But I do enjoy watching all of the first timers achieving their goals of finishing. I'm more likely to volunteer than race this again. I was pleased that this race would have also qualified me for Age Group Nationals since I finished in the top 3.8% of my age group. And top 2.7% overall!
