Pre-race routine:

stretch real good. waded knee deep before start. water temp was close to same at pool, but wind was crazy so I didn't go for a warm up swim. I knew I would freeze waiting for the start.

Comments:

super choppy conditions. In fact storms were moving in so wind was crazy strong. As a result the lake was white capping, and the first 600 was pretty much straight into the white caps. Made for a very exerting swim, more like a float. As I finished they were calling the longer course participants off the course due to lightning. Now I know why triathlons are early in the AM. At least the swim is likely to be more calm. I still haven't figured out why run and bikes start so early, other than avoiding the sun.
What would you do differently?:

become a stronger swimmer, better water conditions
Post race
Warm down:

stagger out of the water and be glad that was over.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

conditions, both weather and my poor physical ability. I really think my 24hr survival float in the ocean was easier. The water conditions were much worse, but I didn't have to burn much energy to simply stay afloat with the survival gear we had. However today, I spent everything I had. Not only just to go forward, but to stay afloat, time breathing with waves, and even get a descent catch of the water. All I had to do on the 24hr float was occasionally tread water while I blew my pants back up, and time my breathing with the waves, but we really didn't care if we drifted 1000 miles in that 24hrs, we just wanted to still be breathing in the AM. I could have done that again tonight, but swimming it was an extremely tough feat, and I am glad I did it. Even thought it was very ugly, slow, and not even really a freestyle swim. It was a new personal limit that I learned how to deal with.

Event comments:

Great Race, several events for multiple level athletes. They had a 1/2, 1, 1.5, and 2.5 mile swims, and then they had all those with two duo courses, one a 5k and one a 10 k. Pick your swim length and run length. Something for everyone.
Great race, just a bad day weather wise. Made for a very hard swim for everyone, but newbies like myself struggled from the first stroke. I would do this race again, but I certainly need to get more practice in bad water conditions. If I could have just settled down, I think I could have done freestyle most of the race. As it was I was happy doing the side, breast, back, and bob strokes to complete the event. After the first buoy, that was the only goal. Rest on the support crew kayaks when needed, and just slowly tick off the distance. Man what a killer race. I was totally burnt coming out of the water. Took me 10-20 minutes to realize that I could have still pedaled off on the bike, but It wouldn't be at my normal pace. Guess In all I have come a long ways. I would have certainly drowned a year ago, had I tried these conditions.
