Up early to gather family in motel room, eat a banana and a clif bar.
Event warmup:

Stand around in a wetsuit waiting for wave 8, with 7 minute intervals.

  • 547 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

What a difference in last year. Granted, there was a dead flat calm swim this time, as opposed to some windy chop last year. The bright sun glare off the water made me really glad for my investment in mirrored goggles. I didn't go fast, but I kept close to the pace I hoped for. I only stopped swimming once to sight, and to deal with just a bit of saltwater near ingestion. Having just done an OWS the week before, of a significantly longer distance, I had no trouble hammering away at this one. I successfully lowered my time significantly from 20:39 last year.
What would you do differently?:

Well, it seems like it may finally be time to learn how to swim properly. I have a goal of sub 10 for next year.
Transition 1
  • 03m 54s
Comments:

Still somewhat long T1 for a sprint, but more than a full minute better than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Not a whole lot really.
Bike
  • 49m 46s
  • 12 miles
  • 14.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Another vast improvement over last year's 1:02:24. I got in the aero bars for descents and flats, and didn't fear passing people, since I knew they'd re-pass on the inclines. Such a change from last year.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to lose weight, get aero, and hammer it out. Next year's goal: sub 40minutes.
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

My T2 was about the same as last year, maybe a bit longer as I paused for a drink.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 40m 23s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 13m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Even though this was a slow run by anyone's standards, it is actually my 5K PR! I went sub 40 once, but that course was short. This course was dead on.
What would you do differently?:

go faster. Duh.
Post race
Warm down:

not much, just grabbed a water and went to the beer tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

You know what BT race report form? I'm not answering this question this time. I PR'ed by 35 minutes, went from bottom 1% to bottom 12%, and PR'ed the 5K course as if it was a stand-alone. I think the question in this situation is "wow, doughboy, how did you improve so much?"

So when you're ready to ask the right question, I'll give you an answer. Otherwise just read my blog, race report form.

Event comments:

excellent post-race music, breakfast burrito, beer, family, fellow racers, blog readers, friendly dogs, pictures.... great experience. Ann is a great race host, the Competitor staff remember details about people from the previous year, the finish line was awesome. I'm going to sound like a fanboy, but TriRock as a series is like RunDisney - they spoil you for other events. Worth the price. And Annapolis is a stellar venue.
